Carriage Hills homes often feature yards framed by trees and decorated with shrubbery.
A midtown neighborhood growing with the city
When Wilmington began filling out, Midtown neighborhoods like Carriage Hills were established to accommodate the city’s growing population. “It’s one of the original neighborhoods of Midtown,” says Sean Skutnik, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty, who has lived in Wilmington since the late 1980s. "It used to be that no one really desired to live in Midtown. Now, because the trees are so mature, it’s got nice sidewalks, and you can walk to parks, it’s become the kind of place that only gets better as time goes on.” The suburban neighborhood’s central location is close to shopping destinations and recreation centers. The Carriage Hills Homeowners Association maintains the neighborhood clubhouse, with fees varying per subdivision.
Luxury townhomes are popular in Carriage Hills.
1990s homes with their own character
“Most of the neighborhood was constructed in the 1990s,” says Jake Wyer, a Broker with eXp Realty. However, some new construction has started popping up. Throughout its subdivisions, common styles include Craftsman and Traditional-style homes, but each one has its own distinct look. “The homes might be a little older with some dated floor plans, but they tend to have more character even when people redo them or spruce them up,” Skutnik says. Homes vary from just over 1,000 square feet to just over 3,000 square feet on around a quarter of an acre. In terms of livable space, apartments make up almost half of the neighborhood. Single-family homes range from the low $300,000s to the low $700,000s, with newer homes on the higher end of the price range. Condos and townhouses sell in the mid $200,000s to the high $300,000s.
Eugene Ashley High School is a school located in New Hanover County in Wilmington, NC.

Pine Valley Elementary scores a B-plus on Niche. Depending on zoning, students may either go to Williston Middle, which earns a B-minus, or Myrtle Grove Middle, which receives a B-plus. Hoggard High receives an A-rating and is a Special Olympics Unified Champion school. In 2023, it was named North Carolina’s choice for ESPN Honor Roll, a national honor for schools demonstrating high standards of inclusion. Ashley High, scoring a C-plus, is also zoned for the neighborhood. It’s home to the Marine Science Academy, where students can transfer to the high school as first-year students to study marine biology and oceanography.
Carriage Hills Clubhouse offers a pool, playground and courts to Carriage Hills residents.
Swimming with friends at the Carriage Hills Clubhouse
Residents and their guests can use the pool, tennis courts and playground at the Carriage Hills Clubhouse. They can also rent the space for private events. On the neighborhood’s northern border, Halyburton Park is a nature preserve that’s primarily undeveloped with sand hills and natural ponds. Within its 60 acres, the park has a playground, a nature center that doubles as an event venue and an apiary in partnership with the New Hanover County Beekeepers Association. There are multiple walking trails, most notably the Cross City Walking and Biking Trail. Wyer says, "It connects downtown to Wrightsville Beach, all the way across Wilmington.” A drive to both Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach will take around 10 miles and 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Barclay Pointe offers an eclectic mix of shops and cuisine.
An expanding shopping center bordering the neighborhood
The Pointe at Barclay is a shopping center less than 2 miles east of Carriage Hills. “It has everything you can imagine, from movie theaters to restaurants to workout facilities,” Skutnik says. Cuisines here range from enchiladas at Zocalo Street Food and Tequila to handcrafted Omakase rolls at Nori Asian Fusion & Sushi Bar. Far From France Bakery and Bistro has a dinner menu of escargot and rib-eye steak and is also a brunch spot with a selection of pastries to choose from. Along North Carolina Highway 132, Pine Valley Shopping Center offers a handful of fast-food options and grocery stores, including Food Lion, Aldi and Publix. Independence Mall is less than 5 miles from Carriage Hills.
Between downtown and the beach
Its location plays a significant role in making the neighborhood desirable. “It’s probably as central as you can get in Wilmington,” Wyer says. However, the neighborhood is within city limits, meaning residents will pay both New Hanover County and Wilmington City property taxes. There is some walkability within the neighborhood, but it is primarily car-dependent. It’s bordered by U.S. Route 421 to the west, and Wave Transit bus stops are scattered around the neighborhood. “Proximity for Historic Downtown Wilmington to Carolina Beach is about midway,” Skutnik says. “It’s 15 to 20 minutes in either direction.” It will take around 10 miles to reach Wilmington International Airport.
Patio dining is a popular past time for Carriage Hills residents at Cloud 9 Rooftop Bar.
Carolina Beach is a popular destination for Carriage Hills families.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
