There’s a large commercial presence on the neighborhood’s west end, near U.S. Route 17. Here, locals can grocery shop at Lowes Foods or eat out at one of the various restaurants, like Carolina Ale House, a laid-back sports bar serving pub fare and beer. In the morning, they can walk to two coffee shops: Social Coffee and Supply Co. and Drift Coffee Shop & Kitchen. Gonzalez explains that it’s common for folks to walk to get coffees in the morning or to grab lunch. “It’s one of the most pedestrian friendly areas in town,” she says. “It’s one of the easiest areas to walk in Wilmington.” Might As Well Bar & Grill is popular come lunch or dinner time, dishing American fare from a laid-back interior. For dessert, Crumbl Cookies, with its weekly menu of rotating flavors, has a location in this area. There are also many big-box stores, like Best Buy, HomeGoods and The Home Depot. The popular mixed-use Mayfaire Town Center is about 3 miles from the neighborhood. The Airlie Gardens are about 3 miles from the neighborhood. Here, flower-lined paths lead past sculptures and fountains, a chapel made of iridescent bottlecaps reflects the sun and numerous community events occur throughout the year. The summertime concert series brings out families on blankets and lawn chairs to listen to live music under the weaving branches of the iconic Airlie Oak. The gardens are illuminated with holiday lights in the winter during the popular Enchanted Airlie event. Visitors can stroll under bright hanging ornaments or watch the light bounce of the water. For a day in the sun, Wrightsville Beach, with its Crystal Pier, sand dunes and beachgrass, is about 5 miles from the neighborhood, while Carolina Beach and its quaint surrounding town and boardwalk are 15 miles south.New Hanover County Schools
Students are zoned for New Hanover County Schools. They can attend College Park Elementary School, which receives a B-minus from Niche, before M.C.S. Noble Middle School, which earns an A-minus. They can finish their public education at New Hanover High School, which gets a B-plus from Niche and offers the Marine Science Academy. In partnership with UNCW, this program offers college-level oceanography and biology courses to enrolled students. Due to its proximity to UNCW, many residents take daily walks through the campus or watch the Seahawks play in various sports games. “The businesses around the college all promote the Seahawks,” Gonzalez says. “People go to their sports games or run on the track. A lot of people walk or bike around their, since the Cross-City trail goes through the campus.”Single-family homes, apartments and condos
College Acres-Hillsdale features an eclectic mix of home styles. A-frame properties sit beside farmhouses and bungalows, but ranch-style homes make up most of the neighborhood’s housing stock. Brown pine needles scattered on the ground can occupy more space than grass on lots. Potential homebuyers can find a ranch-style property for between $325,000 and $645,000, while a split-level or Colonial Revival home, many of which have front porches and pools or fire pits in the back, will cost $560,000 to $665,000. There are also Colonial-style townhouses in College Acres-Hillside that range in price from $295,000 to $423,000. They’re typically built with a mix of brick and siding, feature garages and sit in the southern part of the neighborhood, within walking distance to UNCW. To further accommodate college students, condos, such as The Campus Edge, cost about $75,000 for a one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit and about $130,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit. College Acres-Hillsdale is bordered by U.S. routes 17 and 74. The former connects to U.S. Interstate 40, which leads throughout the Carolinas, while the latter takes locals to Wrightsville Beach. The Wave Transit bus has scattered stops in the neighborhood that lead around the city. Wilmington’s Historic District, with its late 19th-century and early 20th-century structures that earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, is about 7 miles west. In case of emergency, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center is about 6 miles from College Acres-Hillsdale. And to travel from their quaint coastal town to anywhere in the world, locals can head to the Wilmington International Airport, which is about 7 miles northwest of the neighborhood.
