Neighborhood bordering University of North Carolina Wilmington
In Eastwind-Piney Acres, Spanish moss hangs over the roads, darkening them even when the coastal sun shines. Sea pine needles are scattered on yards, sometimes occupying more space than grass. The neighborhood backs up to the University of North Carolina Wilmington, but that doesn’t mean it’s a hub for off-campus housing. “Some properties are rented by students, but the majority are owned,” says Realtor Amanda Gonzalez with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage, who has lived in Wilmington for 12 years. “It’s a popular area, with the Cross-City Trail that goes straight to Wrightsville Beach and the college right there.” Residents are also a short drive from Wilmington’s most popular destinations – Wrightsville Beach, the Airlie Gardens, the Historic District and Mayfaire Town Center. So many attractions within walking or driving distance explains why this is such a popular area for long-term residents to put down roots.

Wandering Airlie Gardens and sunbathing at Wrightsville Beach
The tulip-lined pathways and hanging Spanish moss of the Airlie Gardens are about 2 miles from the neighborhood. The Airlie Oak, a large tree with twisting branches and draping leaves, is the park's centerpiece. A summer concert series is held in its shade, and visitors bring blankets and chairs to listen to family-friendly live music. Every Tuesday from May to September, the garden opens its butterfly house, teaching the public about different kinds of butterflies and their lifecycle. The session concludes when the instructor releases the butterflies, and they fly up to the glass roof toward the sunlight breaking through. Around the holidays, Enchanted Airlie illuminates the grounds. Christmas lights reflect off the water and bathe plants in their glow. But at all times of year, visitors wander the scenic grounds, visiting sites like the bottle chapel. This small structure resembles a stained-glass window, with reflective, iridescent bottlecaps depicting two trees under a bright blue sky. Nearby, the Bradley Creek Marina and the Creekside Yacht Club are where many locals dock their boats. For a day in the sun, the sandy dunes and swaying grass of Wrightsville Beach are about 5 miles from the neighborhood.

Older homes and new construction
There’s a large commercial presence on U.S. Route 17, just outside the neighborhood. Along this road, locals can grab groceries from Tidal Creek Co-op, which sells local produce and hot prepared food. It hosts the Wilmington Farmers Market, where vendors sell produce every Saturday morning year-round – rain or shine. Further up the street is the Lumina Commons shopping center, where there’s a Harris Teeter grocery store, as well as numerous restaurants that are great options for dates or family meals. Brasserie Du Soleil serves French food under low light; Blueberry’s Grill dishes brunch and mimosas from their outdoor patio, where blue wicker chairs sit beside white columns; and Sweet n Savory Café serves American food and pastries from its onsite bakery. The modern mixed-use Mayfaire Town Center shopping area is about 4 miles from the neighborhood and offers retailers like Barnes & Noble, Anthropologie and Banana Republic. There are a variety of dining options as well, from fast-casual eateries like Panera Bread and Cava to well-known chains like Longhorn Steakhouse and Red Robin. Art galleries, boutique fitness studios and a movie theatre make this a great location to spend a day in Wilmington.
