Luxury estates with views of golf greens, lakes or waterways
The wide, winding residential streets here are lined with big oak trees, some shrouded in Spanish moss. Most single-family homes are between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet, resting on highly manicured half-acre lots featuring private pools and multi-car garages. Brick ranch-style homes and cozy patio homes offer single-story living, while sprawling New Traditional homes and Charleston-style designs provide more space. Elaborate custom estates span architectural styles from Spanish Revival to French Country-inspired. “You have houses from $1 million to $4 million; if you were in Florida, they’d be $2.5 to $10 million,” says Pickett, who adds that most properties fall between $1.2 million and $1.7 million. Luxurious mansions on the waterfront are pricier, usually between $3.5 million and $4 million. Townhouses range from $400,000 for a 1,100-square-foot unit to $700,000 for 1,500 square feet near the water. A handful of properties feature small boat slips along the Intracoastal Waterway, but Pickett says most mariners keep their boats in the high and dry slips at the nearby Bradley Creek Marina and Atlantic Marine. Waterways border the neighborhood, but Pickett adds that he hasn’t seen any flooding in Landfall. “All the powerlines are below ground, and when you have hurricanes, typically, electricity doesn’t go out,” Pickett says.
Challenging golf at Country Club of Landfall
Recreation here starts at Country Club of Landfall. Members can tee off on two golf courses designed by famed course architects Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye. With private lessons, clinics and frequent tournaments, the club is credited with cultivating great golfers. “I ended up playing professional golf for about eight years. Landfall is where I became great at golf,” Pickett says. Over a dozen lighted courts provide plenty of space for tennis and pickleball. The Drysdale Sports Center is where members swim, take a group exercise class or relax in the sauna. Nearby, enchanted gardens and colorful sculptures draw tens of thousands to the historic Airlie Gardens each year. “It’s a really good representation of old Southern gardening,” says Derek Criscitiello, an agent with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage. “There are huge Live Oaks, and they have a butterfly garden in there,” says Criscitiello, who moved to Wilmington two years ago after visiting the area often during his childhood. He notes that the surfing, sandcastles and ocean views of Wrightsville Beach are about 5 miles away.An elementary school on an island
Landfall is zoned for New Hanover County Schools. Young children cross the Intracoastal Waterway to attend Wrightsville Beach Elementary, about 5 miles away. Located on Harbor Island, the waterfront school gets an A rating from Niche and offers a Marine Science program. Students head inland for M.C.S. Noble Middle. Earning an A-minus, it’s ranked the second-best public middle school in New Hanover County. New Hanover High, near downtown Wilmington, receives a B-plus grade. Friends School of Wilmington, Cape Fear Academy and Wilmington Christian Academy are nearby private options. The neighborhood is about 6 miles from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the city’s largest university. According to the Landfall Council of Associations, which manages the community’s HOAs, some residents mentor UNCW students and teach at the Cameron School of Business.See Independence Day fireworks from the driving range
The country club keeps social calendars full by offering monthly events, such as cocktail parties, a family night buffet and wine tastings. Annual holiday events include an Easter egg hunt and a Fourth of July celebration. “They set up drinks and a huge party on the driving range, and the whole community gets together to watch fireworks,” Pickett says. Golfers and tennis players of all ages and skill levels can participate in weekly tournaments, interclub matches, private lessons and clinics. The country club also provides year-round activities for the nearly 600 children who are members. The after-school Kids Club offers golf, tennis and swim programs.
Ride a bike to Wrightsville Beach
Sidewalks and multi-use trails make it easy for residents to traverse the neighborhood on foot. The Summer Rest Trail and the Cross City Trail provide miles of paths for cyclists to reach destinations across Wilmington. “Wrightsville Beach is a go-to,” Pickett says. “We can ride a bike to the beach.” Driving is the main way to get around the city. The neighborhood has quick access to Military Cutoff Road (U.S. Highway 17) and Eastwood Road (U.S. Highway 74) for trips downtown, about 10 miles away, and Wilmington International Airport, roughly 11 miles away. While not often used by Landfall residents, Wave Transit provides bus stops along these same streets.Boutique shopping at Lumina Station
Cradled by shopping centers to the south and east, Landfall is a short drive to restaurants and retail. G Prime offers a contemporary steakhouse experience where diners enjoy meals under the soft glow of ornate chandeliers. Kipos Hellenic Cuisine serves modern Greek dishes in its elegant outdoor courtyard, while Terrazzo Trattoria is the more casual spot for pasta and pizza. The family-owned Boombalatti's Homemade Ice Cream scoops up fun flavors like cannoli and caramel macchiato. Members of the country club can dine at the two clubhouses featuring restaurants such as the 18-and-up Jack’s Bar & Grill, or the family-friendly Bistro. “You really don’t have to leave. You’ve got grocery stores right outside of the gate,” Pickett says. Food Lion and Harris Teeter are about 3 miles away, and Lumina Station offers high-end shopping at stores like the popular Fussy Mussy Children's Boutique. “We have a one-year-old, and Fussy Mussy is slammed all the time,” Pickett says. Dozens of national retailers are about 4 miles away at Mayfaire Town Center.
