Life’s necessities are close by in Lords Creek
Cheering fans, the rumble of a practicing drum line, and vehicles whirring along Carolina Beach Road. These are familiar sounds for residents living in Lords Creek. This growing neighborhood, about 4 miles south of Wilmington’s city limits near the Cape Fear River, attracts first-time buyers and retirees looking for a family-friendly community not far from the sun and sand at Carolina Beach. “I walk through Lords Creek when I do my morning walks,” says Deanna Moran, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage. “There are always people out, and a lot of kids live in the neighborhood, because the schools are right there,” says Moran, referencing the sprawling combined campus of Anderson Elementary, Murray Middle and Ashley High that’s hugged by a large park. A shopping center is nearby, and those seeking a Christian faith community have six churches within a mile.
A wide range of home styles on lots surrounded by trees
Two red brick walls inscribed with “Lords Creek” in an Old English-style font greet residents entering the neighborhood. A wide main road, slightly worn and lined with smooth sidewalks, gently curves through the community. Homes rest on modestly landscaped lots adorned with small shrubs, bright red maples and short palm trees. Tall pines rise from shaded backyards. Steadily developed since the 1990s, the neighborhood features a mix of homes. Ranch-style houses, Modern Transitional designs and Craftsman-inspired builds with attached two-car garages are the most common. There are also manufactured homes sitting on brick foundations. Moran says the neighborhood is a good option for first-time home buyers as prices typically falling between $300,000 and $600,000. That means most home prices are below the Wilmington-area median of $555,000. Most buyers pay under $400,000. HOAs govern several subdivisions with monthly fees of $65. As for environmental concerns, Moran says, “We’re going to get hurricanes. I’ve been here since 2010, and the only time we left was for Florence.” She notes that the neighborhood hasn’t experienced flooding.
Three highly rated public schools on one campus
From elementary through high school, students walk through the neighborhood to attend class. Edwin A. Anderson Elementary, Charles P. Murray Middle and Eugene Ashley High share a sprawling campus in Veterans Park. “All the kids grow up together,” Moran says. Anderson Elementary earns an A-minus from Niche and has a passionate PTA that organizes teacher appreciation events, fun family nights and fundraisers. It’s working to replace the aging playground for kindergarten through third grade students. Murray Middle also gets an A-minus and has active parent participation through programs such as Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students), where participating dads volunteer at the school for a day. Ashley High receives a B rating. Students across the school district visit its Minnie Evans Art Center, a state-of-the-art auditorium with nearly 1,000 seats, for concerts, theater productions and other performing arts. Island Montessori School is a nearby alternative. The charter school earns a B-plus and offers preschool through eighth grade. Coastal Christian High School earns a B and is a private option for ninth through 12th grade.
Easy access to Carolina Beach Road
While residents can walk to Veterans Park, a vehicle is needed to get around the area. The entrance to Lords Creek is off Carolina Beach Road (U.S. Route 421), a major thoroughfare connecting downtown Wilmington to Carolina Beach. “You’re 10 minutes or less from Carolina Beach,” Moran says. The drive into downtown is about 11 miles or 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Residents can avoid congestion by taking the scenic River Road, which parallels the Cape Fear River. “It’s a two-lane road that goes through a marsh,” says Sean Skutnik, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage. He adds that the route, known to flood due to its location, is popular with cyclists. Those who need public transportation can order a ride through Wave Transit’s RideMICRO, a point-to-point service similar to a rideshare. Wilmington International Airport is less than 15 miles north.
Veterans Park is a center for youth sports
The 212-acre Veterans Park rests north of the neighborhood and is often a place of community, featuring multiple ballfields, courts and concession stands. “That’s where they have sporting events. Every Saturday, they have soccer games going on,” Moran says. If not at Veterans Park, families head to the newly opened Hanover Pines Nature Park to romp around the owl-shaped play structure, take quiet walks through the woods or socialize their dogs at the dog park. River Road Park features a kayak launch and fishing pier along the Cape Fear River. Golfers can navigate rolling dunes, estuaries and long-leaf pines at the semi-private Beau Rivage Golf & Resort, featuring 18 holes designed by Joe Gessner. Carolina Beach, dotted with yacht clubs and marinas, is about 5 miles away for sailing, swimming and hanging out on the historic boardwalk. A calmer atmosphere can be found along the sandy trails at Carolina Beach State Park.
Monkey Junction features national chains and local restaurants
Masonboro Commons is less than a quarter mile from the neighborhood's main entrance. Anchored by a Food Lion and Planet Fitness, the strip mall features nail & hair salons, a shipping & printing store, and several national chains such as McDonald’s and Jersey Mike’s Subs. Joe’s Oasis is one of the mall’s local eateries. “It’s a little bar and grill. They’re a Pittsburgh restaurant. People go for their pierogies,” Moran says. Skutnik, who’s lived in Wilmington since the 1990s, says Seaview Crab Company is where residents and tourists pick up fresh seafood caught nearby off Masonboro Island. For dozens of national chain stores and restaurants, including Walmart Supercenter and Buffalo Wild Wings, residents head north to Monkey Junction, the historic intersection of Carolina Beach and College roads. It’s home to the Celtic Monkey, a local Irish pub known for live music and friendly service.
