Transitional homes with Colonial Revival and Craftsman-inspired details
Along Pine Hollow’s wide sidewalk-lined streets, single-family homes built between the 1990s and today sit on spacious lots, neatly landscaped and shaded by mature trees. The patio homes and two-story houses here feature transitional architecture. Homes are topped with gabled roofs, windows are adorned with shutters and columns frame front porches. Some designs lean into the symmetry of Colonial Revival, while others are asymmetrical with Craftsman-inspired details, such as shingle siding and wooden brackets and corbels. Most homes cost between $350,000 and $650,000. Buyers can also find condos and townhouses. Condos typically have two bedrooms and feature private balconies, assigned parking spots and community amenities like a pool or tennis court. Townhouses are often three bedrooms and have attached garages and contemporary interiors. Condos and townhouses range from $230,000 to $400,000.Untouched nature at Halyburton Park
Arrowhead Park is hidden in the forest behind Mary C. Williams Elementary. This green space features pickleball and basketball courts, a soccer field and a playground, but its big draw is an 18-hole disc-golf course that winds through the woods. Saunders says neighborhood cyclists can pedal to Halyburton Park to commune with nature. The Gary Shell Cross City Trail loops around the 60-acre preserve, which features a nature and event center and a collection of beehives that’s cared for by the New Hanover County Beekeepers Association. The sustainable Rise Up Community Farm provides fresh fruits and vegetables to a local food pantry, runs a farm share and offers free programs for children and teens, as well as volunteer opportunities. Residents can join the Midtown YMCA to take fitness classes, meet with a personal trainer and have access to an open gym. The private Pine Valley Country Club, which bills itself as “Wilmington’s family club,” features an 18-hole golf course over hills, valleys, Hewletts Creek and pine trees. Boaters can use the ramp at Trails End Park, less than 5 miles to the east, to access the Intracoastal Waterway.Young actors and musicians perform at Eugene Ashley High
Mary C. Williams Elementary sits about 1 ½ miles from the neighborhood. The school earns a B from Niche and gets students out of the classroom for physical education. Since the building doesn’t have a gymnasium, P.E. is taught outside on the soccer field and blacktop. Mature pines surround Myrtle Grove Middle. The school gets a B-plus and offers a variety of electives, from musical theater and guitar to business and vocational technology. The athletic fields of Veterans Park hug Eugene Ashley High. The school receives a B and is home to the Minnie Evans Performing Arts Center, a state-of-the-art auditorium used by students across the New Hanover County Schools District for live performances. The neighborhood is close to two popular private schools. Cape Fear Academy earns an A-plus and offers an engineering certificate program where students must complete a semester-long research and design project. Coastal Christian High School receives a B. Students in its visual arts program submit works yearly to the Association of Christian Schools International’s Fine Art Competition.College and Carolina Beach roads are close by
The convergence of College and Carolina Beach roads, also known as U.S. Route 421, creates the neighborhood's triangular shape. These major thoroughfares offer quick access to popular Wilmington destinations. Carolina Beach is a little less than 9 miles south, and downtown Wilmington is about 9 miles north. While the roads can be busy, especially during beach season, Saunders says traffic flows smoothly. “Traffic only gets nuts where College Road meets Oleander Drive and Shipyard Boulevard,” she says. “NCDOT is aware and is looking for solutions.” Three Wave Transit bus routes loop the neighborhood with stops outside Lowes Foods. Wilmington International Airport is about 11 miles away. Two shopping centers within 2 miles
Residents don’t have to travel far for everyday essentials. A Walmart Supercenter, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Lowes Foods are less than a mile away. Saunders says residents in this part of Wilmington change their habits during tourist season since the Monkey Junction commercial corridor is the last stop before the bridge to Carolina Beach. “Locals know that Saturday afternoons are for vacation move-ins,” she says. “When I lived on that end of town, we went to Lowes Foods on Friday to avoid the Saturday grocery shoppers.” Fast-food chains are joined by a handful of local eateries. Junction 421 serves elevated American fare in its rustic dining room featuring exposed brick and wooden beams. Cape Fear Seafood Co. offers a casual setting for surf and turf. Coffee drinkers hit the drive-through at Port City Java, while DrumTrout Brewing Co. draws in craft beer lovers. A short drive away, the latest blockbusters can be enjoyed at The Pointe 14 movie theater, while the Cameron Art Museum displays work from its permanent collection and rotating exhibitions.
