Subdivisions close to popular beach attractions
Seagate is a residential area of Wilmington just north of Highway 17 with subdivisions developed between the 1960s to today. This quiet neighborhood is a short drive from many of Wilmington's most popular outdoor spots, making it easy to live an active coastal lifestyle. Locals can paddleboard along the Intracoastal Waterway, lay out on the sand at Wrightsville Beach or wander among the blooming flowers of Airlie Gardens – all within 4 miles of home. "It's fun to have the weekend where you can go on the water, or if it's a pretty afternoon, you can go enjoy it after work," says Sherri Ingle, Realtor at Intracoastal Realty Corporation and Wilmington resident since 2002. "And you're close to the Mayfaire area and Landfall, which have all our nice restaurants and boutiques."

Coastal lifestyle near Wrightsville Beach
The Intracoastal Waterway spans 3,000 miles along the east coast and connects to Bradley Creek in the neighborhood. Locals take out their boats from Bradley Creek Marina to ride along the waterway, and paddleboarding and kayaking are also popular pastimes in the Intracoastal. People hang out and have parties at Masonboro Island, just south of Wrightsville Beach along the waterway. “Masonboro is really hot for young people. On holiday weekends, you could almost walk from boat to boat,” Ingle says. Airlie Gardens is just east of Seagate and has walking trails among the manicured blooms. Walkers and bicyclists get outside on the Cross City Trail, which spans across Wilmington, or The Loop at Wrightsville Beach, a 2.5-mile paved path that goes along the water and Wrightsville Beach’s small downtown. Families cool off at Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park’s waterpark, just off Highway 17, or head indoors to play laser tag and arcade games.

Ranches and a handful of new builds
Residential streets in Seagate don't have one cohesive look: some houses sit side by side along cul-de-sacs in small subdivisions, and others are more isolated. Homes are separated by tall trees or even woods in some areas. Most streets don't have sidewalks, and cars park in private driveways. "The area doesn't have a ton of new construction because it's already been developed, but there are random lots here and there [with new builds]," Ingle says. Ranches built in the 1970s cost between $300,000 and $425,000, while newly built modern coastal homes with all-white exteriors and wood shake detailing can range from $1 million to $1.5 million. The most expensive homes back up to Bradley Creek, which "at high tide, will take you out to the Intracoastal," Ingle says. Bradley Creek does, however, mean there is an increased flood risk for some homes in the neighborhood. Three-bedroom townhouse units typically cost between $300,000 and $400,000.

Events in Airlie Gardens
Airlie Gardens hosts a summer concert series on select Fridays from June through September. Residents bring their lawn chairs and blankets to hang out and listen to live music spanning genres like funk, jazz, soul and pop among the trees. A 500-year-old live oak tree is the garden's centerpiece and the backdrop to the summer night concerts. Blooms & Brews in March is an event that invites the public to wander among over 100,000 blooming flowers in the garden. The Airlie Gardens also serves as the venue for the private after-party for sponsors of the North Carolina Azalea Festival. Held each year in April along Wilmington's Riverwalk, the Azalea Festival is Wilmington's largest event, featuring pageants, street vendors, performances and parades spanning over a week.

Shopping and dining in Mayfaire and Wrightsville Beach
Mayfaire is about 3 miles north of Seagate and has well-recognized stores and restaurants such as Pottery Barn, Williams & Sonoma, Cold Stone Creamery and Cava among its options. "Anything close to Mayfaire is sought-after," Ingle says. Wrightsville Beach Brewery is just off Oleander Drive in the neighborhood and serves freshly caught seafood, southern fare and beers on tap. For more options, downtown Wilmington's Riverwalk – which has 200 local shops and restaurants – is about 7 miles west, and Wrightsville Beach is less than 4 miles east. "If you blink, you'll miss downtown Wrightsville Beach, but there are a lot of great restaurants around there," Ingle says. Popular spots include Jimmy's, a dive bar with dollar bills and other mementos tacked all over the wall and ceiling, and South Beach Grill, a seafood spot with a patio overlooking the boat docks in the Banks Channel. For groceries, locals can visit the Harris Teeter or Lidl off Eastwood Road.
The Shed is the go-to spot for beach rentals, Wrightsville gear, and refreshing drinks.
You can find well recognized shops like Talbots at the Mayfaire Town Center.
