Idyllic homes by Mystic Lake
Here in Grove Street, New England estate homes are often tucked behind deciduous trees, and houses are usually separated by white picket fences or tree dividers. Colonial Revivals, eclectic ranch styles, New Traditionals and split levels with brick and vinyl exteriors dot the hilly and winding neighborhood, often listing between $1 million and $3 million. Lot sizes are usually about a quarter-acre, with private driveways that are occasionally horseshoe-shaped. The narrow residential roads are all interconnected, and there are parts of the community that have sidewalks. Several townhouses can also be spotted for $1 or $1.5 million. “There’s a mixture of properties from the 1800s, some built in the 1950s and 1960s and newer redeveloped homes built in the past 20 years,” says Cirignano.

Winchester Public Schools serves the neighborhood with a collection of top-tier schools, all rated A or A-plus by Niche. Students may begin schooling at Ambrose Elementary School and continue to McCall Middle School. Winchester High School is recognized by Niche as the No. 16 best public high school in the state, offering unique courses in creative writing, gender studies, sculpture and photography. The high school also has special athletics programs such as sailing and Nordic skiing. The nationally recognized Tufts University is less than 3 miles away, offering nearly 150 undergraduate majors to students.

From Mystic Lake to Middlesex Fells Reservation
Surrounded by both Upper Mystic Lake and Middlesex Fells Reservation, the neighborhood has myriad recreational opportunities. Mystic Lakes State Park offers 25 miles of trails and is linked to the Tri-Community Greenway, providing scenic views of the river and the wooded landscape. Canoe and kayak rentals are available in the summer. Shannon Beach, a freshwater swim beach, also opens in the summer with a new bathhouse and a large playground. Several blocks north, Ginn Field is by the Aberjona River and features sports fields, basketball courts and the Stone Family Playground. The 2,575-acre Middlesex Fells Reservation is east of the community with over 100 miles of trails, including the 8-mile Skyline Trail offering views of downtown Boston, off-leash play areas for pets and boating at Spot Pond.
Ginn Field offers athletic fields, but you can also find residents enjoying the greenery.

Independent stores and eateries in downtown Winchester
While the neighborhood remains residential, Downtown Winchester features historic architecture and a mix of local retailers and restaurants. Book Ends is a popular bookstore with a wide selection of novels and a full calendar of events, and Pondview Florist offers made-to-order designer flower arrangements. Run by Winchester locals, Blackhorse Tavern is the town staple for comfort tavern food in a traditional brick-style setting. Lucia Ristorante is decorated with artsy murals and offers traditional Italian fare. For something casual, people can stop by D'Agostino's Delicatessen, which has served the community with classic subs since 1968. There is a Stop & Shop on Main Street, and, in the summer months, people can check out the farmers market on Saturdays. Target is about 5 miles away in Burlington.

Convenient transportation to Boston
Interstates 93 and 95 border Winchester, providing residents with convenient highway access. The town is also about 7 to 10 miles away from Boston, Cambridge and the Boston Logan International Airport via Interstate 93. Grove Street is home to Wedgemere Station, and the MBTA commuter rail’s Lowell Line takes commuters directly to Boston’s North Station. Another train station, Winchester Center, is several blocks north in the downtown area, and Winchester Hospital is right in the town and is about 2 miles north of the neighborhood.

Events and traditions in town
Since 1935, the En Ka Fair, the non-profit organization’s fundraising event, has been a long-held tradition that takes place every May with carnival rides, street food, games and a parade. The En Ka Society is run by over 200 women volunteers and serves the Winchester community by providing service programs and grants to those in need. Winchester Town Day, another tradition for over 40 years, celebrates the town with live music, athletic competitions, exhibits and a fireworks show.
