Established in 1952, the city of Windy Hills is known as a “city of historic homes.” Located about 8 miles from downtown, the Kentucky suburb puts its own history within easy reach of modern-day Louisville. “Windy Hills is a beautiful residential area that is known for its history and friendliness,” says Realtor Sandy Gulick, a Louisville native with almost 40 years of real estate experience.

Inspired by established 19th-century colonials
Sprawling and sometimes hilly streets curve alongside manicured lawns and tree-shaded sidewalks. With enduring beauty, homes built by early pioneer families from Virginia and Pennsylvania still stand alongside developments from the 20th century, including the historical landmark of Herr-Rudy House. “Houses are generally a little smaller compared to neighboring places like Indian Hills,” Gulick says, noting that ranch styles and colonial homes are the predominant architectural styles. Townhouses and condominium communities within Windy Hills fit smoothly among the stand-alone homes. The median listing price for real estate here is $405,000; a first-floor condo could list as low as $130,000, while a new traditional example spanning over 4,000 square feet fetches up to $734,500.

Top-rated education at Jefferson County Public Schools
Children in Windy Hills attend top-rated Jefferson County Public Schools, the sixth-best school district in the Louisville area, according to Niche. Kids may start their education at Greathouse Shryock Traditional Elementary School before advancing to Barret Traditional Middle School, both of which earn an A-minus overall score from Niche. Students at Ballard High School can take part in its visual arts program, which is the largest in Kentucky. The high school gets an A score and earns the twelfth spot on Niche’s list of best public high schools in Kentucky.

Barrett Middle School in Crescent Hill has been awarded a National Blue ribbon school.

Tickled green with Rudy the Bear
Windy Hills Green is indeed a green refuge that greets residents and guests as they enter the neighborhood. “It’s small but very pretty,” Gulick notes. Folks enjoy people-watching from benches throughout the park, taking a stroll on the winding path, or hanging out with Windy Hills’ friendliest occupant: the statue of Rudy the Bear. Plaques to commemorate events or memorialize loved ones sit at the foot of the park’s trees, a gesture that reflects how close the Windy Hills community is. Those a little more active can explore The Loop, a 3-mile path that runs along the border of the city. Parents can also take their kids to Sojourn Community Church for a day at the playground and baseball field and eat lunch at the picnic tables.

Walkable locales and convenient groceries
Amid the walkability of Windy Hills, some residents can stroll directly to the restaurants at Brownsboro Road Shopping Center. “There are some really good restaurants here, from fine dining to casual bites,” Gulick says. Noosh Nosh is a casual all-day café with a wide-ranging Mediterranean and Italian-inspired menu. From under the playfully bright sign, regulars order their notable Nosh linguine and Margherita pizza. For a more upscale experience, foodies head to Anoosh Bistro for some twists on American cuisine. Residents can stock up their pantries and fridges at nearby groceries like The Fresh Market, Kroger and Paul’s Fruit Market.
