Living between suburbia and wide-open spaces

The halfway point between Atlantic City and Philadelphia, Winslow Township marks where suburban Camden County crosses over to rural farmland. “More west in Sicklerville and closer to Philly is the area with strip malls, home developments and stores like Target,” says J. Greg Damone, a broker at Better Homes and Gardens Maturo with 20 years of real estate experience. “Toward the south and east, starting around the Blue Anchor area, it’s more rural with land." Many residents of this two-lane town were farmers until the 1970s, and then developers started constructing new subdivisions with sizable single-family homes in the Sicklerville area. With much of the area’s natural resources still intact, locals can go hiking through old-growth forests and taste wine from a selection of nearby vineyards, making this a prime bedroom community for outdoor enthusiasts. “Winslow Township provides flexibility for people with different interests,” Damone says.

From modern townhomes to classic colonials

In the more suburban sections of Winslow Township, sidewalk-lined streets run through subdivisions made up primarily of colonial homes and New Traditional properties. Many of these houses offer privacy-fenced backyards and multicar garages, some featuring solar-paneled roofs, ranging between $240,000 and $615,000. In another nearby subdivision with looping streets, townhomes with attached garages, some built in 2022, have units that sell from $190,000 to around $340,000. In the more rural sections of town, land-buyers will find a plethora of plots for sale, starting as low as $17,000 for a half-acre of land to $1 million for more than 20 acres. Also in this area are subdivisions with midcentury ranch homes and open residential space where farmhouse-inspired properties on multiple acres sit far from neighbors, ranging anywhere between $150,000 and $640,000.

Award-winning countryside wineries

With wide open spaces comes room for wineries, golf courses and nature preserves, which Winslow Township has in abundance. In the downtown area, Sharrott Winery is an award-winning winery in an expansive Farmhouse Revival barn that offers live music weekly. Nearby, White Horse Winery offers tastings in a laid-back open-air setting. To the north, Amalthea Cellars Farm Winery is another award-winning winery that takes patrons back to the 1800s French countryside. On the south side of town, Plagido’s Winery and Kennedy Cellars Winery are quainter options to sip on locally-made wine. Avid golfers can play at the public Pinelands Golf Club, and at Jersey Devil Golf and Fun Center, families can practice their swings at the driving range or putts at the mini golf course. Families also take advantage of Diggerland USA just north of town, a construction-themed amusement and water park.

Forest preserves and community park space

The natural green space around Winslow Township allows for wildlife reserves and state forests. On the west side, Winslow Fish and Wildlife Management Area allows for licensed hunting and fishing, or brave visitors might dip into Blue Hole for a swim. “The legend is that Blue Hole is where the Jersey Devil lives now,” Damone says. “The myth is that it’s bottomless and people get sucked in there.” Nearby, New Brooklyn Park features unmarked trails and dirt roads throughout its 760-acre expanse that also includes two playgrounds, a disc golf course and a canoe launch for waterborne recreation. “Winslow Township also has access to Wharton State Forest, where there’s trails that a lot of hikers will use,” Damone says. Residents and their furry friends can stretch their legs at the Daniel Calabrese Memorial Park, complete with baseball fields and an off-leash dog park. Peter Volpa Memorial Park offers 32 acres of athletic courts, play areas and several soccer fields that are home to the Winslow Township Soccer Association.

Seafood in Sicklerville and Italian in Hammonton

Residents can easily travel outside of Winslow Township for work and entertainment, as White Horse Pike and Atlantic City Expressway flank the area’s outskirts. In the more densely populated Sicklerville, seafood lovers can feast on crab cakes and stuffed salmon before washing their meals down with a cocktail at Sea Bar 2 Grill & Spirits. A more casual eatery, the Winslow Diner specializes in breakfast classics and burgers. Centrally located in Winslow Township, Mr. Bill’s Richman’s Ice Cream & Burger Co is a local favorite for window-serve ice cream and dine-in burgers. There are a few neighborhood markets and convenience stores for the essentials, but for bigger grocery hauls, residents would need to head north to ACME Markets a little past Sicklerville or south to ShopRite in Hammonton. “Hammonton also has a main street you can walk down with a lot of niche restaurants,” Damone says. Many of these eateries are Italian bistros and bakeries.
