Suburban enclave anchored by Heather Hills Golf Course
Aldbridge-Heather Hills gets part of its name from the small golf course at its center; the other comes from its northernmost subdivision. Encompassing several communities southwest of Downtown Winston-Salem, this neighborhood covers a large swath of land between Interstate 40 and Clemmonsville Road outside Hanes Mall. “I love it there,” says Tina Whiteheart, a Realtor with Park Place Real Estate who has lived in the community for 23 years. “It is close to everything: downtown, restaurants, the mall, parks. I can walk to the doctor’s office. Every freeway is close.” She adds that the neighborhood makeup has changed greatly since she first moved in. “It was a much older community. My son didn’t have other kids to play with. Now, there are a lot of young families moving into the neighborhood.”
Brick ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and farmhouse-style Cape Cods
Creeks flow between the wooded hills of Aldbridge-Heather Hills, where wide residential streets curve over the terrain. “It’s close to everything but is still very private,” says Samantha Mosley, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Elite who’s a longtime resident of the Winston-Salem area. “There are lots of trees and greenery, but it’s not backwoods. It has a suburban feel.” In the northern half of the neighborhood, single-family homes are mostly midcentury brick ranch-style houses, single-story and raised, often featuring basements and attached garages. A few split-levels and contemporary designs are mixed in. With no homeowners association, each house looks different from the next. Traditional homes, Colonial Revivals and farmhouse-style Cape Cods from the late 1980s through the early 2000s line the subdivisions to the south, which sometimes come with HOAs. New construction is also available. Yards throughout the neighborhood are neatly landscaped and shaded by mature trees. Lot sizes vary from under a quarter of an acre to half an acre. Most homes cost between $200,000 and $350,000, aside from new construction, which can top $500,000. Condos and townhouses start at $120,000 and can reach $225,000.
Properties near creeks have a flood risk, and Whiteheart says potential buyers should note that foundation issues are common in Winston-Salem. “For some homes, it’s poor construction, but most of the time, we see water in the crawl space and moisture coming through the walls,” she says. A solar farm and a wastewater treatment plant sit just outside the neighborhood, but Whiteheart says the facilities don’t impact day-to-day life.

A passionate PTA at Kimmel Farm Elementary
Three public elementary schools serve the neighborhood. Bolton Elementary earns a B-minus from Niche, while Griffith Elementary gets a C-plus. However, most homes are zoned for Kimmel Farm Elementary. The school receives a B-minus rating and is supported by a passionate PTA that holds events throughout the year to keep the community connected, including a fall festival, a book fair and family fun nights. Students can move on to Wiley Magnet Middle, a STEAM-focused school earning a B-minus, or the C-plus-rated Flat Rock Middle, which sits beside Kimmel Farm Elementary and offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. The IB program continues at Parkland High, which earns a B-minus rating. Nearby private options include the unrated Saint John’s Lutheran School and the A-plus-rated Calvary Day School. Forsyth Technical Community College is about 2 miles away.

Remote-controlled planes take flight at Hobby Park
Hidden among a thick swath of forest, Hobby Park offers some unique forms of recreation, including an airfield for remote-controlled airplanes and dirt tracks for radio-controlled cars. A challenging 2.8-mile trail is popular for avid mountain bikers and hikers. Nearby Bolton Park provides a more traditional city park experience, with a large recently updated playground, tennis courts, a public outdoor pool and a fitness trail. Heather Hills Golf Course sits in the heart of the neighborhood. The 18-hole layout wraps around its namesake townhouse community, which hosts Cornerstone Café & Catering. Golfers can also practice their skills at Smiley’s Golf and Learning Center, a driving range and mini golf course that sits a short distance from the neighborhood. The William G. White Jr. Family YMCA is about 5 miles away for indoor workouts and children’s summer camps.

Hanes Mall, several grocers and local eateries close by
The busy commercial corridor surrounding Hanes Mall is only a few miles to the east. “Retail-wise, you have anything from Walmart and Lowe’s Home Improvement to Sam’s Club and Costco. There’s higher-end dining, lower-end dining, Ross and Home Goods,” says Whiteheart, who recommends visiting Café Arthur’s in the nearby Ardmore neighborhood. “They have been there a very long time. They just got sold to another family in the area. It’s a little diner with fantastic food and great people.” P.B.'s Takeout, a hole-in-the-wall spot for hot dogs, sits next door. “It’s tiny,” Whiteheart says. “There are probably six seats inside — an oldie but goodie.” Mosley’s favorite is Village Tavern, a popular date-night spot serving elevated American fare. Publix, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe's sit north of the neighborhood along South Stratford Road.

Quick access to Interstate 40
Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stops dot Hanes Mall Road and Silas Creek Parkway, but most people rely on their cars for transportation. Interstate 40 slices through the northernmost section of the neighborhood, providing access to U.S. routes 158 and 421, but commuters don’t have to take highways to reach Downtown Winston-Salem. “We normally use Hawthorne Road, and that takes you to First Street,” says Whiteheart, who notes that traffic usually gets congested around the highway interchanges during rush hour. “At 5:30 p.m., you’ll have a little bit of traffic, but it’s not terrible. Going out of town towards Kernersville, you’ll have a slowdown, and it will pick up.” Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center is about 3 miles north of the neighborhood. Piedmont Triad International Airport is roughly 27 miles west, near Greensboro.
