Buena Vista
Well-maintained homes on Winston-Salem suburban streets
Laid out on forested neighborhood streets, Buena Vista’s homes convey a sense of privacy. Neighbors walk their dogs and jog on the sidewalks past landscaped front yards. Cross-gabled ranches populate the neighborhood, while some higher-end Georgian or Colonial-style homes slip in between. Those luxurious properties can go for as much as $1.5 million, while the more modest, older homes start around $400,000. In the heart of the neighborhood are the College Village condos, with small townhome-style units that sell for around $200,000.Highly rated schools for Buena Vista kids
Buena Vista students attend school in the well-regarded Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools system. Students have choices among a number of nearby schools and magnet academies, but the normal path for residents of Buena Vista starts at the neighborhood’s Whitaker Elementary School, given an A-minus grade by Niche. Next up is Wiley Magnet Middle School, rated a B-minus, followed by the B-plus graded RJ Reynolds High School. Reynolds offers an Arts Magnet program, with students able to choose the level of the program they want to pursue.Recreation for all ages at Forsyth Country Club
Neighborhood residents take advantage of Buena Vista’s wooded environs, with nearby Shaffner Park a common stop for kids and adults alike. Children climb the dragon-themed jungle gym, while those looking to get a workout in can jog on the gravel trails. The park connects to the Silas Creek Greenway, a path that parallels its namesake stream. Adjacent to Buena Vista is the private Forsyth Country Club, with plenty of amenities. While golfers can enjoy the Donald Ross-designed course, the club has something for the whole family. “We have a wonderful, state-of-the-art exercise center, classrooms for teaching, an on-site masseuse,” says Yates, a member of the club since 1983. “We have a kids club, day camp. It’s very pro-family, lots of activities for all age groups.”Local shopping and dining in Buena Vista
Buena Vista’s community spirit is reinforced by the presence of its neighborhood shopping and dining establishments. Easily accessible in the center of Buena Vista is Buie’s Market, a small grocer that emphasizes locally sourced food and offers meal kits for its patrons. In the same building is Diamondback Grill, an eatery whose menu changes daily, with choices including pizza, tacos or a Sloppy Joe. On the edge of Buena Vista is the locally famous Coffee Park, serving locally roasted brews and baked goods from an Airstream trailer. And just down Stratford Road is Milner’s, with another neighborhood connection. “That was founded by two young men, the Milner brothers, who grew up in Buena Vista,” says Yates. For any shopping needs, the Thruway Shopping Center is to the south of the neighborhood and features a Trader Joe’s and a number of clothing stores.Easy access to downtown Winston-Salem and across the Triad
Just three miles west of downtown Winston-Salem, Buena Vista residents have an easy 10-minute drive into the city. The neighborhood is also close to the Silas Creek Parkway and Route 421, making commutes or shopping trips throughout the Triad area easy. The Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus system stops on the periphery of Buena Vista, but residents rarely use the system, preferring to drive to their destinations. Piedmont Triad International Airport, just a 30-minute drive away, serves cities up and down the East Coast, with limited flights to hubs such as Chicago and Dallas.Neighborhood trick-or-treating
Buena Vista itself doesn’t host many festivals and events, although they do shut down a neighborhood street for a community trick-or-treating event each Halloween, says Yates. But it’s easy to get to thriving downtown Winston-Salem, with plenty of entertainment to go around. Buena Vista is also close to Wake Forest University and its NCAA Division I sports, or Winston-Salem State University’s Division II athletics.
