Historic Black neighborhood east of Downtown Winston-Salem
Steps from Downtown Winston-Salem, on the east side of U.S. Route 52, is the historically Black community of East Winston. Named after its geographic location, this neighborhood traces back to the early 1900s. Today, it’s known for its 100-year-old homes and quick access to Winston-Salem State University, some of the city’s most beloved parks and a historic NASCAR track. Like many neighboring communities, East Winston has faced decades of economic struggle following urban renewal and highway construction in the 1960s. This is partly why renters vastly outnumber homeowners here. “It’s a very lively neighborhood,” says Renica Hamilton, a Realtor with Keller Williams One who’s been selling homes in the area for seven years. “There are some longtime residents. They know the neighborhood and they want to make it a nice place to live.” Hamilton, who describes the community as up-and-coming, adds that the handful of churches dotting the area are critical to the neighborhood fabric. “Those churches offer a lot of community events. They look out for the community members and help if anyone is in need.” East Winston receives a CAP Index crime score of 8 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Century-old Craftsman bungalows to midcentury ranch-style homes
Throughout East Winston is a variety of 20th-century housing. While many dwellings are from the first half of the 1900s, the community saw an additional growth spurt in the 1960s and 1970s. Because of this, small craftsman bungalows and cottages share dense city blocks with ranch-style homes, split-levels and American Foursquares. There are also a few Victorian homes still standing. Many properties are in the middle of renovation or reconstruction. “There are a lot of old, beautiful historic homes there that just need a little love,” says Samatha Mosley, a 6 ½-year Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Elite. “There’s a lot of potential in that area.” Lots are around 1/3 acre or less, framed by sidewalks and driveways of varying condition. Lawns are modestly landscaped with shaped shrubs and small flower beds. “For anyone looking to invest or are first-time homebuyers, that’s a good area to start out,” says Hamilton, who notes that some homes are used as short-term rentals and student housing. Properties can list as low as $75,000 and up to $250,000, but most homes typically cost between $100,000 and $150,000.
Green spaces where the neighborhood comes together
Rupert Bell Park and Neighborhood Center sits in the heart of the neighborhood and features a baseball diamond, playground and splash pad surrounded by trees. The large, covered pavilion is where many residents host birthday celebrations, family reunions and other occasions. The neighborhood center provides various classes and programs, including bingo, line dancing and baking. Brushy Fork Park is a popular spot for basketball and provides the southernmost part of the neighborhood with open green space. To the east, Skyland Park sits next to the Head Start Daycare Center and has an access point to the Brushy Fork Greenway, a shady trail that runs parallel to its namesake creek. Reynolds Park offers the closest golf course, which features 18 holes over hilly terrain. The glittering Salem Lake is roughly 3 miles away. In stark contrast to the urban environment of the city parks, Salem Lake is hugged by dense forest and draws visitors across the city for hiking, kayaking and fishing. “It’s my favorite place to go and run,” Mosley says. “It has a 7-mile loop. The trail is pretty wide with no rocks or roots, but there are hills and switchbacks.”

Forsyth Seafood Market and Café is a community staple
While there are many restaurants and retail options to explore downtown, East Winston has plenty inside its own borders. Other Suns Coffee Shop is a locally loved café that serves freshly brewed coffee and warm vegan bites. Another popular spot in the neighborhood is Forsyth Seafood Market and Cafe. The restaurant is stocked four times a week with freshly caught seafood, including crab, salmon and oysters. Their menu is also a seafood lover’s delight, with crab cakes, clam strips and more served alongside crispy hush puppies. Groceries and prescriptions can be picked up at Food Lion and CVS in Eastway Plaza. Compare Foods and Family Dollar are nearby on Martin Luther King Junior Drive.

Dating to 1892, the historically black Winston-Salem State University sits just south of the neighborhood. “They have a fantastic physical therapy program,” Mosley says. With a conference center and Bowman Gray Stadium, there’s always something happening on campus that the public can enjoy. “There are lots of good opportunities for family-friendly events like the football games,” Hamilton says. In addition to football, the stadium is NASCAR’s oldest track. Stock car drivers zoom around the short track every Saturday night, spring through summer.
