Over its 200-year history, Flat Rock and its neighbors in Southeast Winston-Salem were centers of industry in North Carolina. On the edge of Flat Rock, the Nissen Wagon Works factory was a driver of economic development in the area, its remnants still standing today. And throughout the 20th century, Piedmont Quarry employed many residents in its deep granite channels. Today, much of the local industry has pulled out of Flat Rock as jobs shifted to downtown Winston-Salem. But the history remains alongside demographic shifts, as the area has become home to much of the city’s Hispanic population. Along with less expensive housing for the city, Flat Rock's convenience to Winston-Salem draws residents to the area.
