How the city got its name
Winston-Salem was founded in 1913 from two separate towns a mile apart. Winston was named in 1851 after Major Joseph Winston, a Revolutionary War hero. Salem, from the Hebrew word "shalom," was created by colonists in 1766. In the 1880s, the U.S. Post Office started to refer to the towns with the two names as Winston-Salem. Following a decade of contention, the U.S. Post Office established the Winston-Salem post office in 1899, officially incorporating the name "Winston-Salem."City has convenient shopping and dining
For grocery shopping, residents have a few choices, including Publix, Harris Teeter and Food Lion, all within a 15-minute drive from anywhere in the neighborhood. There are a few unique local businesses in town, like McKay's. Not only can locals find used books and records here, but residents can trade in their used volumes, music, movies, video games and more for cash or store credit. Locals can drive 3 miles to Hanes Mall, the only indoor mall in Winston-Salem, which features chain store favorites like Belk, Dillard's, Macy's, JCPenney and Old Navy. The complex sits off Stratford Road, the main thoroughfare throughout the city. "The majority of the residents do their shopping at Hanes Mall Boulevard and Stratford Road," Katsamas says. A favorite local watering hole for lunch and dinner is Sixty Six Grill, featuring American cuisine.Transportation
Though there is a Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stop on Silas Creek Pkwy, most residents rely on their cars for transportation. Piedmont Triad International Airport is a 27-mile drive via I-40 E.
