Salem, from the Hebrew word "shalom," was created by colonists in 1766. In the 1880s, the U.S. Post Office started to refer to the towns with the two names together as Winston-Salem. Following a decade of contention, the U.S. Post Office established the Winston-Salem post office in 1899, officially incorporating the name "Winston-Salem."From big box to local retail
