County calm, city convenience
In the thick of Winston-Salem’s woodsy northwest corner, Moravian-Baywood offers a blend of county and city living. “It’s right off Murray Road, which goes out to rural Bethania,” says Brandon Rich, a born-and-raised Piedmont Triad local and Realtor with Mossy Oak Properties Land & Farm Realty. “As you get farther from Winston, of course, it gets more rural. The good thing about this area is that you’ve got quick and easy access to US Route 52 just down the road. So you’ve got all the conveniences of the city within just a short drive, without having to live in all the hustle and bustle that you associate with downtown.” He says Moravian-Baywood is “right there in the sweet spot” between rural and urban living. Realtor Alejandro Grunseth of Alemay Realty, who has been working with clients in Winston-Salem for 20 years, agrees. “It's a very quiet area, really desirable, with lots of mature oaks and other trees, lots of families. It's good for commuting, too.”

Late 20th-century suburban homes with lots of land
Moravian-Baywood’s wide residential streets are lined with well-maintained homes ranging in style from split-levels to Colonial Revival and Traditional. “The homes were built in the ‘70s and ‘80s, so they’re not like a lot of new builds that are right next to each other. You’ve got land, you’ve got space. There are kids playing in their yards whenever I drive through,” says Grunseth, adding that when properties here go on the market, they sell quickly. “I think we’re still in a seller’s market. But it’s definitely slowed down some; it’s not as crazy to the extent that it was a couple years ago,” says Rich. Prices start at around 275,000 and can go up to more than 420,000. Homes typically go under contract in just under a month, about 14 days faster than the national average.

Health Science program at North Forsyth High
Moravian-Baywood students are served by schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools system. Kids between preschool and fifth grade go to Gibson, which earns a C from Niche. The elementary school is perched conveniently at the neighborhood’s north end, within 2 miles of most homes. Older students go to Northwest Middle, which earns a C-plus. High schoolers attend North Forsyth, which earns a C and is the only school in the district with a health science-focused magnet program. Participants in the Health Science Magnet Program can concentrate their studies on biomedicine or veterinary science. Paid internships and mentoring/networking opportunities are also available through North Forsyth’s partnership with businesses in the local healthcare sector.

Near Moravian-Baywood, the Bethabara Trailhead offers broad hiking trails.
Minutes north of Malloy and Historic Bethabara Parks
The sunny playground at Nelson Malloy Park is about 3 miles south of most homes. The park also has a splash pad, where kids can cool in the summer months off by running through the sprinkler or bucket-style water features. Between the playground and splash pad, there’s a covered picnic area. A flat, paved path circles the park area, too. Historic Bethabara Park is about 4 miles south of home. Named for Bethabara, the first European settlement in the North Carolina Piedmont region, the park’s preserved 18th-century buildings feature living history and static exhibits. The surrounding grounds offer more than 180 acres of protected wetlands and walking/birding trails. Bethabara Park hosts seasonal events, too, like the annual Apple Festival and Boo! at Bethabara celebrations in the fall and Christmas at Bethabara in December.
Minutes from downtown dining; groceries even closer
Locals can pick up groceries and other everyday essentials at Food Lion, Walgreens and La Victoria Grocery & Meat Market. All three stores are on Reynolda Road, a bustling main thoroughfare just a few miles southwest of home. Several casual eateries are nearby, including popular Mexican restaurants like El Camino Real and Taco Riendo 3. But Winston-Salem’s real dining scene is downtown, about 11 miles southeast. “There’s a great downtown scene now. They’ve done a heck of a job revitalizing things down there, especially in the Innovation Quarter,” says Rich. The vibrant district is home to trendy spots like the newly opened Six Hundred°, which serves European-inspired Southern fare with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients. Nearby, Alma’s modern Mexican cuisine and outdoor patio seating draw customers from around town all year round.

Bus services link Moravian-Baywood with surrounding communities.
Between US Route 52 and Reynolda Road
Shattalon Drive, which runs east-west past the south side of the neighborhood, is lined with Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stops. Many of them are more than a mile and a half away, so residents typically use personal vehicles to get around town instead. US Route 52 and Reynolda Road bookend the neighborhood to the northeast and southwest, respectively. Heading into downtown, nearly 11 miles southeast, is just a 15-minute drive via Route 52. Rich says “quick and easy access” to the highway is one of the best things about the neighborhood’s location. “It connects into the new Interstate 74 bypass,” he adds, referring to the bypass project designed to link US Route 158 to Interstate 74. Work on the bypass began in 2014; the completion date is TBD.
