Mount Tabor
Suburban Neighborhood in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Forsyth County 27106
Custom, New Traditional and ranch-style homes surrounded by trees
Mount Tabor offers a wide range of home styles and prices. Midcentury ranch-style homes and split-levels, usually under 2,000 square feet, rest on modestly landscaped grassy lots. Prices for these homes start around $250,000 and reach $350,000. 21st-century New Traditional homes and custom builds in the Bent Tree Farm subdivision are dispersed along wide paved roads that wind through the neighborhood’s hilly terrain. Dense pockets of mature forest surround these properties, providing a sense of seclusion. These houses are also some of the neighborhood’s largest, with more than 4,000 square feet of interior space with price tags to match. Buyers typically pay between $550,000 to more than $1 million. A collection of 1970s brick townhouse communities sits in the neighborhood’s eastern end. These two and three-bedroom units sell for between $165,000 and $230,000. Jessica Moore, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Elite, says buyers should be aware of one issue that commonly appears on inspection reports in Winston-Salem. “We are in the Piedmont foothills, so moisture in crawl spaces is not uncommon, but it’s not something that should scare people away,” says Moore, who’s lived in the city for nearly a decade.Nautical-themed green spaces and elementary play dates
Families head to Leinbach Park, next to the Robinhood Road Family YMCA, to romp around its nautical-themed playground anchored by a boat-shaped jungle gym. A gravel walking path wraps around the park’s tennis courts and picnic shelter. Visitors should be advised that dogs are not allowed here, but dog owners can take their pups to the Jamison Dog Park, about 4 ½ miles away. Cyclists can reach this green space by pedaling down the Muddy Creek Greenway, which connects to bike-friendly streets, including Robinhood Road. Neighborhood golfers are less than 4 miles from two private golf courses. Old Town Club, hugged by the campus of Wake Forest University, features 18 holes designed by famed course architect Perry Maxwell. Forsyth Country Club offers 18 holes designed by Donald Ross.Top-rated Forsyth County schools
Mount Tabor students are zoned for Jefferson Elementary, the first Leader in Me school in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The Leader in Me model equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to be leaders in their community. Thomas Jefferson Middle is about 3 miles away; both schools earn an A-minus rating from Niche. Mount Tabor High receives a B-plus and encourages students to prevent the summer slide by participating in a summer reading challenge. Students are entered into a prize drawing for every 200 pages read. Summit School and Calvary Day School, two nearby private options, both earn an A-plus. The neighborhood is about 4 miles from the private Wake Forest University, popular for its business, management and marketing majors.Reynolda Historic District and Winston-Salem's origin story
Important historical sites surround Mount Tabor. About 4 miles away is Reynolda Historic District, the country estate and tobacco farm community where Richard Joshua Reynolds lived. “Reynolds has a legacy in this area. His family really built Winston-Salem,” says Jenny Boneno, branch manager at Reynolda Manor Branch Library. The district serves as an educational and cultural hub for the Winston-Salem community. “The Reynolds’ estate is now a huge American art and history museum,” says Boneno. “There’s also Reynolda Village, where a lot of historic buildings were converted into shops and restaurants.” Mount Tabor is also 4 miles from Historic Bethabara Park, a historical marker for the first Moravian refugee settlement in North Carolina, and 6 miles from Historic Town of Salem.Making it to Interstate 40
Although Mount Tabor is a mostly car-dependent community, residents can still access a few Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stops along Robinhood Road. “The only noticeable disadvantage I see to this area is that it’s a little far from Interstate 40,” Boneno says. “But to be fair, it’s only about 9 miles away.” Silas Creek Parkway (State Route 67) is the closest thoroughfare and the fastest route to Interstate 40. Piedmont Triad International Airport is a 30-mile drive east.
Long-standing restaurants and Sherwood Plaza retailers
The neighborhood’s primary shopping center, Sherwood Plaza, is only a mile away, featuring Lowes Foods and T.J. Maxx. Mount Tabor Place has familiar brands, including the Fresh Market and CVS Pharmacy. The area is sprinkled with fast-food and fast-casual restaurants, such as Biscuitville and Five Guys, but there are also local eateries. Bobo’s Deli and Grill is a recently revamped family-owned restaurant offering American fare. Vincenzo’s is the spot for a comforting bowl of pasta and is one of the city’s oldest family-run restaurants, dating back to 1964. Serving the community for over 100 years, Wilkerson Moravian Bakery is the oldest Moravian bakery in North Carolina and is a short drive away. For boutique-style shopping and more diverse dining, residents head downtown.
