The late 20th century expansion of Sherwood Forest
The original Sherwood Forest neighborhood was built on farmland outside city limits in the mid-1900s, part of a housing boom during Winston-Salem’s tobacco and textile industry heyday. As the west side of the city continued developing between the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Sherwood Forest grew, too, and the offshoot became New Sherwood Forest. Today, the younger neighborhood is sought after for its well-maintained, tree-shaded homes, its highly rated schools and its convenient location less than 10 miles west of downtown. Express Home Realty’s Lane Young, a broker with three decades of experience in the local real estate market, says homebuyers are drawn here for the “beautiful” suburban aesthetic and convenient location. “It’s a safe and walkable neighborhood, and people really love their neighbors here.”

Late 20th century construction
Construction in New Sherwood Forest began in the late 1970s, but most homes here were built between the ‘80s and early 2010s. Unlike newer Winston-Salem residential developments, these homes sit on spacious lots, some as large as a quarter of an acre. Young says the lot sizes are part of New Sherwood’s appeal. Brick Colonial Revival homes built in the ‘80s tend to sell for between $375,000 and $675,000 while newer Traditional homes can sell for between $650,000 and $1.2 million. The neighborhood’s townhomes start at around $175,000 and can go up to $300,000. Realtor Shane Wagoner of Hubbard Commercial, a Winston-Salem local, says that not only is it rare to see homes go up for sale here, but once they are on the market, they don’t sit for long. In fact, homes typically sell after just 19 days – 25 days faster than the national average.

Student work is often on display in exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. Known locally as SECCA, the multimedia art gallery is just a few miles east of New Sherwood Forest. Jefferson middle schoolers work with faculty, staff and parents to reduce food insecurity in the wider Winston-Salem community with the TJMS Community Food Pantry. Mount Tabor students can participate in extracurriculars ranging from Academic Team to Zoology Club. The middle school gets an A-minus from Niche while the high school gets a B-plus.
