North Winston is a suburban residential neighborhood that lies just west of U.S. Route 52 and 2 miles north of downtown Winston-Salem. Wake Forest University teaches almost 9,000 students and is located 2 miles west of North Winston. Nicknamed the Twin City, in reference to its dueling names, Winston-Salem is the birthplace of many iconic American brands. Camel cigarettes and Krispy Kreme donuts both got their start in Winston. A school district with magnetic pull
Residents of North Winston have the advantage of being located near two award-winning magnet schools. A magnet school is an honor reserved for only 50 public schools in the United States, indicating top-notch academics and a cutting-edge curriculum. Paisely IB Magnet School serves grades 6-10 and features an innovative robotics curriculum taught by NASA-trained professionals. Attendance is available through both zoning and an application process. Paisely is situated about 2 miles from North Winston and picks up a B rating on Niche. It shares a campus with Lowrance Middle School, which serves special needs students in grades 6-8. The second magnet school in the area is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places for being over 100 years old and is located fewer than 4 miles from the neighborhood. R.J. Reynolds High School earns a B+ rating on Niche and has a laundry list of successful alumni, including former Senator Richard Burr, late NFL wide receiver Kenny Duckett, and Men’s VCU Basketball Coach Ryan Odom, whose face adorns the outside of billboards near the Homes.com headquarters in Richmond, VA. Outside of these magnet schools, there are 13 additional public and private schools in the area. For lower school, parents send their children to nearby Kimberly Park Elementary School, which picks up a C rating on Niche and is located about a mile outside of North Winston’s boundaries.

Winston-Salem is a hotbed for southern cuisine and Carolina-style barbeque. Westside Soul food is located within the neighborhood and serves up classic American dishes like barbeque pork ribs and mac and cheese. Camel City BBQ Factory is a locally famous restaurant in downtown Winston Salem. Set in an industrial-style venue, this restaurant provides arcade games and a lively atmosphere along with excellent southern cuisine. Fried Chicken and sweet tea are also staples of the restaurant scene here. Food Lion is located a mile north of the neighborhood and is the preferred grocery store for residents.

Children need to remember to wear their helmet when they visit the Glenn Avenue Skate Park, which is conveniently located within the neighborhood. Steep ramps and railings provide skateboarders and bikers all the amenities they need to practice their craft. Blum Park provides residents access to a baseball diamond and a public pavilion. Greenway Park provides children access to a playground.

North Winston provides residents access to public transportation through a series of bus stops that run through the neighborhood. The signature lime green buses of Winston-Salem are easy for residents to spot as they drive past. There is also an electronical bicycle system, that allows residents to pay for temporary use of a bicycle. The area is conveniently located near three major hubs of transportation, including U.S. Route 52, U.S. Route 311 and the Smith Reynolds Airport. The public school system is a major employer, as is Wells Fargo and Hanesbrands clothing. The largest employer is the healthcare system, with Atrium and Novant Health systems collectively employing almost 30,000 residents.
