The rural edges of Winston-Salem
Northeast Winston-Salem makes up the outer edge of city limits, as residential streets begin to turn into wooded North Carolina countryside. Straddling Interstate 74 from north to east, this area offers quiet living with easy access to the nearby cities of Kernersville and Greensboro. "There's a lot of older mid-century homes out there," says Robert Wiley, a real estate Broker with Keller Williams Realty with over 20 years of experience in the area. "And developers are building new construction anywhere they can find lots."
Ranch-style living
Newer developments tend to be closer to the main road, usually on the inner side of Interstate 74. These contemporary homes go for just over $200,000. But most properties in the area were built in the mid-1900s, primarily brick and vinyl ranch-style homes. These homes can start at $100,000 for fixer-uppers and get up to $300,000 for homes with 10 acres. Most fall around $200,000 with 1/2-acre lots. There aren't many sidewalks this far out from the city center, and backyards are bordered by undeveloped forests.

Head to the mountains
Winston-Salem is a popular spot for outdoorsy folk who like mid-size city living with access to the mountains. In Northeast Winston-Salem, the heart of the city is a bit further away, but residents have direct access to the most frequented outdoor spots. 20 miles north, Hanging Rock State Park is a common destination for hiking, camping or beating the summer heat with a dip in the lake. Pilot State Park is also a straight shot up U.S. Route 52 and is known for its hiking and rock-climbing options.
Big brands and local eateries
The nearby University Parkway puts chain eateries and big brands like Target and Walmart just minutes away. Nearby attractions include a movie theater, trampoline park and the Kaleideum North, a children's science museum that older residents might remember as SciWorks. For restaurants, Francesco's, which opened in 2023, is a recent local favorite for Italian food. And Zoe's Family Restaurant has been serving up southern comfort food for many years. Industrial jobs and commuting options
Winston-Salem is home to various large brands and industrial businesses, many of which are located on the city's north side. The R.J. Reynolds warehouse, the Hanes corporate office, and Cook Medical manufacturers are among those businesses. "There's a lot of employment opportunities up there," Wiley says. "But people also commute — most into downtown but also out to Kernersville and Greensboro." For commuters, downtown is 10 or so miles away, often less than a twenty-minute commute. Kernersville is 15 miles away, and Greensboro is 30 miles away. The Northern Beltway project is expected to extend major roads across the northwest side of the city in the coming years, opening up the possibility for westward commutes. For longer trips, the Piedmont International Airport is on the way to Greensboro.
