A scene of carports, with wide-open, large lawns and tree-lined roads are what residents of Northwoods-Old Carver can expect. Just north of the commercial-only Smith Reynolds Airport, the neighborhood sits between Old and New Walkertown Road. “It’s a quiet area,” says Jeuron Dove, Library Branch Supervisor of the Carver School Road Branch Library. The stillness is a direct result of a residential neighborhood void of the bustling activity and traffic that come with commercial and retail businesses. Brick ranch-style and split-levels with median price of $179,000
Homes in Northwoods-Old Carver have a median price of $179,000 with many Ranch-styles and split levels throughout the neighborhood. There is some land a little less than an acre for sale within the neighborhood for about $75,000 to $80,000, although a lot with .42 acres sold for as little as $8,000 in the neighborhood. A brick ranch-style home can begin selling around $120,000 and sell for as much as $250,000 while a split-level starts around $140,000 and can reach around $220,000. New two-story construction homes with attached two-car garages sell for around $150,000 and can sell up to almost $300,000, but most homes have carports, single-car garages or no garage at all.
Many of the homes in Northwoods-Old Carver sit a top small sloping yards.

Few sidewalks and 30-day bus passes
Some roads have sidewalks within the neighborhood, but cars or public transportation are more commonly used. “Public transportation is quite common,” says Dove. “But most people walk or drive to the library. For groceries, people drive.” The Winston-Salem Transit Authority has bus stops along Carver School Road, with Route 96 coming through once an hour. A 30-day pass costs $30 with free transfers for buses heading into downtown Winston-Salem.
After-school tutoring for high school students
Students can begin school at Prince Ibraham Elementary School, which earns a C on Niche, for prekindergarten through fifth grade. They can then move on to Walkertown Middle School, which earns a C+ on Niche for 6th to 8th grade. Students can graduate from Carver High School, which scores a C on Niche, and places an emphasis on after-school tutoring. In 2023, the principal of Carver organized “Team Sting,” a nonprofit organization that financially helps support students on campus, with items such as sports uniforms.
Carver High School is a historical school named after George Washington Carver.
The Ibraham Elementary School in Winston-Salem has a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1.

Eight miles by car to Walmart Supercenter
The neighborhood itself is fairly walkable, but shopping or dining requires that one travel a few miles away. From Carver High School, the closest Walmart Supercenter is almost eight miles away. Food Lion is about four miles away and if residents want to walk, sections of the road will have sidewalks. For a cup of coffee, residents can go to Krankies on 3rd South Street in downtown Winston-Salem. For drinks after work, Incendiary Brewing on North Patterson Avenue just one block north from Krankies.
Food Lion is close to Northwoods-Old Carver and provides a good grocery option.
Head downtown from Northwoods-Old Carver Heights and enjoy a meal at The Camel City BBQ Factory.

Community center and nearby fishing in the lake
The Carl H. Russel Community Center contains tennis courts, a playground, while behind the community center, the Helen W. Nichols Park has a reservable covered picnic area close to the playground as well as a baseball diamond. Crawford Park has a basketball court, baseball diamond, a playground and a covered pavilion for residents to enjoy. Winston Lake Park allows residents to fish or enjoy the 2.4 mile walk around the shoreline of the lake in addition to the multiple playground areas and covered seating options.
Library services and five miles from baseball
The Carver School Road Branch, which is one of ten libraries that make up the Forsyth County Library System and services Winston-Salem and some of the surrounding towns, hosted a craft outreach program in 2023 and reading programs at the Carl H. Russel Community Center. For those who enjoy the arts, the Reynolda House Museum of American Art has around 250-years’ worth of historic American art lining the walls. For sport fans, summer days mean watching the Dash minor league baseball team take on their rivals at the Truist Stadium, just about five miles away.
