A growing garden of homes
The burgeoning Oak Garden neighborhood is East of downtown Winston-Salem and south of Kernersville. Filled with blossoming subdivisions, Oak Garden is a community rapidly sprouting into a highly desired suburban enclave. "This is a pretty quiet area," says Realtor April Mullenaux of RE/MAX Realty Consultants, who has been selling in the area for six years. "It's a suburban community with a lot of recent construction." With almost every home being owner-occupied, the area has a low turnover rate and neighbors who get to know one another. One can witness the neighborhood's growth through the trees bordering the perimeter of each street, ranging from newly planted red maples to towering mature white oaks dating to when the homes were completed. Proximity to the industrial and retail-heavy Kernersville and a major highway leading to downtown Winston-Salem gives commuters a peaceful seclusion with room to grow alongside the trees. Nearby parks and access to the best school district in the county are just another bonus for the plentiful Oak Garden.

Divisions with quick turnover
Oak Garden is a newer neighborhood, with most homes constructed in the 21st century. The more established houses of the area show a wide range of architectural styles and sit on larger plots than homes in the growing subdivisions. Despite being slightly older, the larger homes are the more expensive in the area, ranging between $325,000 and $400,000. Several small subdivisions, such as Sedge Hollow, Abbey Park, and Beeson Park, offer homes on quarter-acre lots. These cookie-cutter communities host ranch-style homes and farmhouse-inspired Craftsman houses with 1,500 to 2,000 square feet. The new houses sell between $250,000 and $350,000 and are quickly off the market due to the neighborhood's growing demand. Selling after just 17 days listed, Oak Garden real estate has a competitive timeframe - even for the hot market of Winston-Salem. The area has no sidewalks, but the wide residential streets get little through traffic, making them open for strolls and jogs. The subdivisions have no security gates, but they do have a below-average CAP Index score. The neighborhood scores a 2 out of 10, while the national average is a 4.

Little League games on the weekends
Quarter-acre lots are standard, with plenty of room for pools, trampolines or playgrounds. Residents can head to the multi-use fields at Ivey M. Redmond Sports Complex for extra running space. Soccer nets, baseball diamonds and a playground surround an extra-large parking lot. The park is bustling on the weekends and in the summer, with residents attending Little League games and soccer tournaments. "Fourth of July Park is worth the 15-minute drive from Oak Garden," Mullenaux says. The pet-friendly location has paved walking trails through wooded areas, tennis courts, pickleball courts and a skate park. Attendees can also reserve shelters with picnic benches and charcoal grills.

A few buzzworthy events
Once a year, Kernersville and surrounding communities buzz over the Honeybee Festival. The first festival was celebrated in September 1975 to honor a local townsman who helped enlist the honeybee as North Carolina's official state insect. Every year since, it has welcomed those from all over to celebrate with games, crafts and food. The festival reaches nearly 10,000 attendees, with over 100 vendors filling Fourth of July Park. The Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden is a beneficiary of the state insect's pollinating powers. Not only is it a centerpiece known for its picturesque gardens, but it is a hosting ground for community-wide events. The gardens are open daily from sunrise to sunset, free of change. Annual events like Spectacular April Bloom show off beautiful tulips while plant sales and storytelling occur in the garden.
Best school district in the county
Given that a quarter of the neighborhood's population is under 18 years old, access to respectable schools is vital. Oak Garden is zoned for Winston Salem/Forsyth County School District, the best school district in the surrounding Greensboro area. The collection of schools rates an A-plus in diversity by Niche.com. Sedge Garden Elementary School is where many begin their education and is rated a B by Niche. Southeast Middle School and Robert B. Glenn High School both receive a C-plus. The high school also hosts the Interact Club. This service club allows students to foster leadership skills while developing service projects that improve the community.
Sedge Garden Elementary School hosts nearly 800 students, with a 16:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

Neighbors with a large shopping plaza
Just east of Oak Garden is a small shopping center containing a Food Lion and some local restaurants. National chains and fast-food spots take up many retail locations. Still, Blue Naples Pizzeria of Kernersville is where locals head for a casual sit-down meal. The restaurant serves classic Italian dishes and appetizers at generous prices to accompany their large pizzas. Residents can also do some thrifting at Smith and Co. Consignment or head to Kernersville's busy shopping plazas to run errands. Walmart, Kohl's, Target and Lowe's neighbor each other, alongside more fast-food restaurants and chain eateries.

Getting around Oak Garden
