Old Sherwood Forest
Suburban Neighborhood in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Forsyth County 27104, 27106
Mid-20th century homes
Most homes in Old Sherwood Forest were built in the 1960s and ‘70s, but some are as old as the ‘50s or as new as the 2010s. Lot sizes here are generous – usually somewhere between a quarter of an acre and a full acre. Prices for split-level and ranch-style homes tend to start close to $210,000 and can go up to around $650,000 while larger Colonial Revivals typically sell for between $525,000 and $833,000. The neighborhood’s 2010s-era Traditional homes can go for as much as $852,000, but there are few of them available.Surrounded by outdoor recreation
Old Sherwood Forest is surrounded on nearly all sides by outdoor recreation. Leinbach Park, near the north end of the neighborhood, has a nautical-themed playground – the swings and monkey bars overlook a climbing structure made to look like a ship. There’s also a seasonal water feature, tennis/volleyball courts and a half-mile walking trail. On the community’s southeast end, the Sherwood Parcourse is a paved exercise trail that follows Silas Creek east to Shaffner Park. Shaffner has a playground and tennis court, too, as well as a sunny soccer field. The private Forsyth Country Club, nearby, offers an 18-hole Donald Ross golf course and a heated outdoor pool. In the summer, the club hosts the Crazy Ducks swim team, which is open to non-members. Glenridge Pool, northwest of Old Sherwood Forest, also hosts a summer league swim team: the Gators.Highly rated Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools
Many neighborhood students go to Sherwood Forest Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Middle and Mount Tabor High School between preschool and 12th grade. The elementary school, which earns an A grade from Niche, engages kids with curricula that emphasize visual arts and science. Student work is often on display in exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. Known locally as SECCA, the multimedia art gallery is a few miles east of the neighborhood. The elementary school itself, though, is within a quarter mile of most homes. Baldwin says when she lived here in fifth grade, she was able to walk to school. Jefferson Middle students work with faculty, staff and parents to reduce food insecurity in the wider Winston-Salem community with the TJMS Community Food Pantry. Mount Tabor high schoolers can participate in extracurriculars ranging from Academic Team to Zoology Club. The middle school gets an A-minus from Niche while the high school gets a B-plus.Quick access to Silas Creek Parkway
The Silas Creek Parkway runs north-south along the community’s east side. It connects north toward Wake Forest University and south toward Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, both major local employers. U.S. Route 421 and Interstate 40 intersect a few miles southeast of Old Sherwood Forest. The drive into downtown, about 7 miles east, can take as little as 12 minutes via Route 421, depending on the time of day. Driving to the Piedmont Triad International Airport, in Greensboro nearly 30 miles away, takes around 30 minutes from here.Close to retailers and restaurants on Robinhood Road
There’s a string of shopping centers on Robinhood Road just north of Old Sherwood Forest. Locals can head there to pick up groceries at The Fresh Market, Harris Teeter or Lowes Foods. Dollar Tree and T.J. Maxx are nearby, too, along with a few national chain eateries such as Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks. Momo Ashi Café serves bubble tea and quick bites; their “pawninis,” sandwiches hot-pressed into paw shapes, are popular menu items. Nearby River Birch Lodge offers casual American fare in a rustic mountain cabin-themed setting. Clothing retailers such as J. Crew Factory and Talbots are close to Old Sherwood Forest, too, in the shopping centers off U.S. Route 421 a few miles southeast. And the Hanes Mall Boulevard/Interstate 40 business corridors, a little farther southeast, feature big box retailers galore, from Costco and Sam’s Club to Target and Hobby Lobby.Crime
Old Sherwood Forest’s CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10. That’s lower than the national average of 4 out of 10.
