Peace Haven
Mid- to late-20th-century homes
Most of these homes were built between the 1960s and 1980s, but a few 1950s and early-2000s builds are dotted here and there. Classic red brick and vinyl-sided ranch-style homes sit on spacious lots next to raised ranch-style homes and split-levels. Peace Haven’s largest homes tend to be Colonial/Greek Revivals or Traditional homes built between the late ’80s and early 2000s. Prices start at close to $250,000 and can climb to more than $660,000, depending on size, age, and condition.Highly rated Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools
Sherwood Forest Elementary, which earns an A grade from Niche, engages students between kindergarten and fifth grade with curricula that emphasize visual arts and science. Student work is often on display in exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, known locally as SECCA, a multimedia art gallery a few miles northeast of Peace Haven. Thomas Jefferson Middle gets an A-minus from Niche. Jefferson students work with faculty, staff and parents to address food insecurity in the wider Winston-Salem community with the TJMS Community Food Pantry, which is open on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Students at the B-plus-graded Mount Tabor High School can participate in extracurriculars ranging from Academic Team to Zoology Club.Close to swimming, tennis and Cricket’s Nest crafting
Peace Haven Pool & Tennis, near the middle of the neighborhood, features a 25-meter heated outdoor pool and a separate wading pool for little kids. The main pool hosts the Peace Haven Dolphins swim team and swim lessons in the summer. There are also two tennis courts, a basketball court and a playground. A couple miles south across Silas Creek, Panthers Field is home to the South Fork Panthers, a volunteer-led football and cheerleading program. It’s drawn kids from around the city for practices, games and camps since 1995. The adjacent South Fork Park has another playground and tennis court, as well as picnic areas and an exercise course. Cricket’s Nest Craft Shop, next to the South Fork Community Center, sells handmade goods by local seniors aged 55 and up. The boutique puts on events throughout the year, from the Firecracker Festival in July to the Cricket Craft Festival in September.Restaurants and big-box retailers galore on nearby business corridors
At the corner of Country Club Road and North Peace Haven Road, there’s a smattering of retailers and restaurants, including Walgreens and Harris Teeter. Kimono Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar and Monte De Rey Mexican bookend Gretchen’s Treasure Chest, a locally owned children’s clothing boutique. Down the street, The Barn on Country Club sells unique home décor, vintage collectibles and antique furniture. And Real Q serves up pit-cooked, Lexington-style barbecue. It’s been a popular local spot since 1991. “If you’re looking for Sam’s Club or Costco, stores like that, you’re going to pop over to the Hanes Mall area,” Christie says, referring to the busy Hanes Mall Boulevard, Stratford Road and Interstate 40 business corridors just a few miles south of Peace Haven.Commuting via U.S. Route 421 and Silas Creek Parkway
Onramps to Interstate 40 are accessible a few miles south of Peace Haven. The interstate connects east toward the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, about 32 miles away. Local commuting is done on U.S. Route 421, which curves past the southeast side of the neighborhood, and Silas Creek Parkway, which runs north-south past the east side. Route 421 heads east into downtown; Christie says the nearly 8-mile drive takes “10 to 15 minutes tops, depending on the time of day.” The parkway heads northeast toward Wake Forest University, a major local employer.Crime
