Salem Woods
Architecture’s greatest suburban hits from 1950 to today
Pockets of midcentury ranch-style and split-level-style homes peek from between subdivisions filled with Traditional and Modern Transitional-style homes built between the ‘90s and late 2010s. Sidewalks are sporadic—available on some streets, not on others. One- and two-car garages are common, and most properties have broad front lawns, with spacious backyards enclosed by tall privacy fences. Prices start at $200,000 and can climb as high as more than $500,000, which is well over the median for the city and surrounding county.Grade school STEAM, STEM and arts magnet programs
Between preschool and fifth grade, kids go to either Moore Elementary or Ward Elementary, depending on their address. Moore, which earns a B-minus from Niche and typically serves kids in the north half of the neighborhood, offers a STEAM magnet program. Ward typically serves kids in the south half; it earns a C-plus from Niche. Older students continue to either Wiley Magnet Middle, which has a STEAM magnet program, or Clemmons Middle. Wiley earns a B-minus and Clemmons earns a B-plus. Atkins Academic & Technology High School offers a continuing STEM magnet program between ninth and 12th grade, and it earns an A from Niche. Reynolds High earns a B-plus, as well as the No. 13 spot on Niche’s list of the best high schools for the arts in North Carolina for its Arts for Academics Magnet Program.Parks that have it all, from splash pads to soapbox derbies
Hobby Park, off West Clemmonsville Road and less than 4 miles south of home, is exactly what its name suggests: a hobbyist’s haven. There’s a paved and striped soapbox derby track for downhill miniature car races, circular pads for control-line circle flyers and a runway for radio-controlled aircraft. “We’ve also held slalom skateboard events here, including the US National Championships,” says Bobby Hege, the Lakes & Special Use Facilities Supervisor with the Winston-Salem Recreation & Parks department. He adds that there’s a circular flyer group that gets together at the park every Saturday, but that the heaviest traffic in the park is on the shady, multiuse trails. “We have a bicycle race through the woods every year, along with a running race,” he says, referring to the annual Racing in the Woods biking event and regular Hobby Trails footraces. Little Creek Park, just south of Interstate 40 on the north side of the neighborhood, offers an array of sports courts and fields for athletic locals, as well as a seasonal splash pad and a playground for youngsters. For golfing enthusiasts, the public Heather Hills Golf Course is just under 3 miles east.Groceries, errands and retail therapy, all in easy reach
Residents can head to the buzzing business corridors clustered around I-40 and US Route 421 for all kinds of shopping and dining options. For groceries, both Costco and Sam’s Club are about 3 miles away. Big box retailers like Target, Walmart Supercenter, Home Depot and Lowe’s are nearby, too. Village Tavern, one of Ingram’s favorite eateries in town, is right down the street. The regional chain is popular for its global-inspired American fare and cozy, Western-style atmosphere. Just north across I-40, Hanes Mall is Winston-Salem’s only indoor mall. “It’s like an old-style mall trying to hang on,” says Ingram. Anchored by JCPenney, Hanes has all the typical mall stores, from Spencer’s and Belk to Hollister and Forever 21. A ring of familiar fast-casual and sit-down-style eateries like Olive Garden and Red Robin surrounds the mall.Main roads galore in southwest Winston-Salem
I-40 and US Route 421 bustle by the north side of Salem Woods. The 7.3-mile drive northeast into downtown takes a little less than 15 minutes via Route 421, depending on traffic. Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stops are in easy reach, too, spaced along Hanes Mall Boulevard and US Route 158.
