A neighborhood affected by East Winston’s history
Like much of East Winston, Skyland’s history traces back through the city of Winston-Salem’s early 20th-century redlining practices. By the 1940s, it was a majority Black neighborhood, and a well-to-do one. “Back in the day, it was a very prestigious area to live in,” says Isaiah Black, President of Liberty East Redevelopment Inc., an organization working to create new affordable housing opportunities for East Winston. “There were a lot of professional people living in that area.” While the homes have been well-kept, structural economic factors have hurt the neighborhood, with less businesses operating in the area. But Skyland’s strong history still helps to define the neighborhood.

Well-maintained homes in Skyland
Turning into the Skyland neighborhood, smaller homes on each side line the gently sloped streets. The houses sometimes sit above the road, with stairways adorning the front yards up to their wrought iron doors. Most homes were built between the 1950s and 1970s, although some have been recently updated. “People here take pride in their homes, they’ve been well-maintained,” Black says. Small cottages and bungalows, many with just two bedrooms, sell in the low- to mid-$100,000s, while larger ranch-style homes go from the mid-$100,000s to around $250,000. The neighborhood also features a few no-frills apartment complexes.

A few neighborhood restaurants
The character of the neighborhood around Skyland has changed over the years, with many businesses leaving. “There used to be a lot of Black businesses over in East Winston and northeast of the city,” Black says. “But now, as far as grocery stores or businesses, it doesn’t seem like much money has been put in that section of town.” Residents of the neighborhood only need to drive half a mile to the nearest grocery store, a Food Lion on New Walkertown Road. Restaurants, however, are relatively scarce, and the majority are chains like Bojangles or McDonald’s. Notable exceptions include Goodness Gracious, with homestyle favorites like oxtail, and Antojitos las Delicias, which specializes in Mexican fast food.

Important to know
Skyland’s history is intertwined with the broader East Winston area, as the neighborhood was affected by redlining before becoming a largely Black neighborhood in the 1940s and 1950s. That, plus other structural factors, mean that the median household income for Skyland falls below the national average, though higher than some nearby neighborhoods. The CAP Index Crime Score is higher than the national average, but community organizations such as Liberty East Redevelopment Inc. are working to address the root causes and keep the community strong. “There’s been moderate to high levels of crime,” Black says. “But we do a lot of educational things, working with youth is what we do.”
