Kernersville greets you with stunning plant and flower displays.
A growing Kernersville community
With blooming botanical gardens, bustling shopping centers and growing subdivisions, Sun Meadows is different from the rural farmland it once was. This peaceful community, part of the Kernersville township, sits about 8 ½ miles east of downtown Winston-Salem. Driving along two-lane roads that pass by farms is part of daily life here, attracting buyers looking for a suburban home in a country-like setting. However, residents don’t have to travel far to get what they need. “One advantage of the Sun Meadows area is you can get to the Target shopping center, Lowe's Home Improvement and Walmart without crossing major highways,” says Carolyn Esterly, a Re/Max Preferred Properties Realtor. She adds that the neighborhood is a popular choice for families. “Kernersville offers so many soccer, t-ball and baseball leagues. The YMCA has so much for kids.” Sun Meadows also boasts a low risk for crime, receiving a CAP Index risk score of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Spacious lawns and a mix of home styles
A quaint wooden sign inscribed with the community’s name greets residents as they drive in. Sun Meadows’ narrow, unmarked streets gently flow over the hilly landscape. In the more established section of the neighborhood, red-brick ranch-style homes from the 1960s and 1970s sit on spacious grassy lawns that can reach over an acre. Mature shade trees dot front yards, while backyards rest against swaths of forest. A mix of two-story Traditional, transitional and Colonial Revival homes built over the last 20 years sit along wider streets in the neighborhood’s newest developments. These properties feature smaller manicured yards and often come with homeowners’ association fees, typically around $20 a month. While most single-family homes fall between $200,000 and $400,000, The Courtyards at Harmon Mill subdivision offer newly built single-story transitional homes costing between $415,000 and $500,000.

Shopping and dining on Kernersville Road
Several large shopping centers sit to the east of the neighborhood along Kernersville Road. That’s where everyday essentials can be picked up at national retailers like Target, Walmart Supercenter and Lowe’s Home Improvement. Harris Teeter and Food Lion are the closest grocers. This commercial corridor is home to a few small businesses, including Accent Prone, a home goods store stocked with chic décor and furniture, and The Loop, a beloved regional pizza chain known for serving slices with steak fries and its tall milkshakes. Esterly, who’s lived in the Kernersville area for over three decades, says residents often head downtown to support the small businesses there. “Downtown Kernersville is adorable. Little breweries are popping up. There are restaurants and boutique shops.” To start the day, Kernersville's Route 66 Diner serves breakfast all day. Sixty Six Grill and Taphouse draws customers for its sports bar vibe, while craft beer and wine lovers enjoy tastings at The Brewer's Kettle.

Honoring veterans at Triad Park
Several lakes surround Sun Meadows. To the west is Salem Lake, a large body of water popular for boating and kayaking. The Salem Creek Greenway wraps around the tree-lined banks, offering views of the reservoir’s calm waters. North of the neighborhood is Old Kernersville Lake Park. Considered a hidden gem, trees surround this smaller lake, offering a peaceful place to fish or spot turtles and birds. Nearby, the Kernersville Family YMCA features two outdoor pools for leisure swimming or private lessons. Triad Park, a sprawling green space that straddles Forsyth and Guilford counties, has a sand volleyball court and soccer and baseball fields. In the back of the park, the Patriot Disc Golf Course hugs the Carolina Field of Honor, a veteran’s memorial centered around a tall monolith modeled after the Washington Monument. Created in honor of Paul Ciener, The Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden is a small oasis of landscaped gardens along South Main Street. Ciener, a longtime Piedmont Triad resident, had a passion for horticulture. The garden is his gift to the community and hosts events throughout the year, including The Summer in the Gardens Craft Fair, where attendees get to shop, dine and listen to live music as the garden is in full bloom.

The Honeybee Festival celebrates North Carolina’s official insect
Just north of downtown Kernersville is Fourth of July Park. On a typical day, this woodsy green space is visited for its playground, dog park and skate park, but on the third Saturday in August, it’s buzzing with thousands of visitors for the annual Honeybee Festival. Coinciding with World Honeybee Day, the event features bee education, local honey and related products, dozens of vendors, live music and food. Kernersville resident Brady Mullinax is the inspiration behind the festival. He successfully lobbied to make the honeybee the state insect in the 1970s.

She notes that admission is lottery-based. Extending Interstate 74
Sun Meadows is a car-dependent community, and Kernersville Road offers a quick route into downtown Kernersville, less than 4 miles east. U.S. Route 421, also known as Salem Parkway, is nearby for the 8 ½-mile drive into Downtown Winston-Salem. Interstate 40, which connects major cities in North Carolina, such as Greensboro and Raleigh, is a short drive from the neighborhood. Interstate 74 will be easily accessible once the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway project is complete. The North Carolina Department of Transportation connects the northern section of I-74 to the southern section of the interstate to alleviate traffic on smaller thoroughfares. I-74 is currently under construction but once finished; it will run through Sun Meadow’s western edge. “This project has been in the works since the 1990s. It’s partially built and has been helpful with traffic congestion,” says Clement Little, an Allen Tate Realtor who’s lived in the city since the 1980s. He notes that some houses were removed to make room for the highway. Piedmont Triad International Airport is roughly 16 miles east.
