Split between residential streets and a college campus
Deep into the city of Winston-Salem's southside is the community of Sunnyside. The neighborhood has a rush of youthful energy with the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in the northern quarter. While the neighborhood is busy with industrial and institutional buildings in the north, gridded streets of apartments and single-family homes make up the south. Tall trees and access to green spaces make this urban neighborhood feel enveloped in nature while staying close to the action and culture of downtown.

Less expensive houses than the rest of Winston-Salem
Sunnyside carries an abundance of housing from across every decade of the 1900s. "Sunnyside is an older neighborhood, where the homes are fairly small compared to surrounding neighborhoods — typically, about 1,000 square feet," says Sandra Aroche of Aroche Realty. "However, with many houses being flipped, the neighborhood is up-and-coming." The most common house styling is the early 20th-century bungalow, with wide front porches and low-pitch gabled roofs. A few Colonial-style, multi-level homes also dot the area and are over a century old. The neighborhood's terrain flows with large trees and wavy hills, leaving some houses shaded and slightly elevated. Many homes have small staircases from their front doors leading to sidewalk-lined streets. The median for home prices is $150,000, but fixer-uppers can be as low as $80,000 and remodels as high as $350,000. Houses in the area sell in less than two weeks, likely because of their very approachable price point, which is $100,000 less than the Winston-Salem average.

The waterside trail stretches over 5 miles and welcomes walkers, joggers and bikers alike. The scenic trail, shaded by tall trails along its border, leads north to a 400-meter track, multiuse fields and splash pad at Happy Hill Park.

Stay local for casual meals or head downtown for date night
Many residents of Sunnyside head to downtown Winston-Salem for restaurants providing a date night out or bite to eat for special occasions, but for in-town quick eats, a few local sports stand out. "Sunnyside gets the best of both worlds," says Sandra Aroche of Aroche Realty. "They're close to downtown, but also very close to some smaller authentic restaurants." La Oaxaqueña Taqueria, for example, is the go-to for Mexican food. The 4.7-star rated location has the area's best tacos, burritos and gorditas. A Food Lion can be found outside the neighborhood to the east, while more extensive shopping plazas carrying Walmart, Publix and fast-food chains are 10 minutes away, west of Winston-Salem.
