Town And Country Estates
A neighborhood association that’s building community
Neighbors come together through the Town and Country Neighborhood Association to plan community socials and beautify shared areas. The association is not a Homeowner’s Association; membership is voluntary, and the group’s priority is creating a unified voice and camaraderie. Moore, a Winston-Salem resident since 2015, says clients who live here have really good experiences with their neighbors. “One resident had a problem with their tree, and their neighbor helped them fix it.” TNCA also organizes seasonal events, such as the Halloween Parade, an Easter Egg Hunt and National Night Out. National Night Out is an annual, nationally recognized celebration that promotes partnership between local law enforcement and neighborhood communities.Midcentury ranch-style homes and spacious New Traditional builds
The neighborhood is a sprawling network of residential streets that climb and descend over tree-covered rolling hills. The neighborhood’s newest developments feature sidewalks. Homes are evenly spaced on grassy lots, nearly an acre in size. Lawns are neatly trimmed and peppered with tall shade trees and rounded shrubs. New Traditional, split-level and ranch-style homes are most common, usually with three to five bedrooms and attached garages or open-air carports. Jenny Boneno, branch manager at Reynolda Manor Branch Library, says most homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s. “The homes are just good and solidly built, and all the well-established homes from that time have these beautiful red brick exteriors.” Most homes cost between $200,000 and $550,000, but larger New Traditional homes and newly built properties range from $400,000 to more than $800,000. Town and Country Estates features the Dr. Maya Angelou Legacy Home, located on Valley Road. This brick house, adorned with a French door entryway framed by white columns, was where the legendary author and civil rights activist lived from 1991 until her death in 2014.Schools in the top 10 of Forsyth County
Speas Global Elementary, an authorized International Baccalaureate World magnet school with a Spanish immersion program, earns a B-minus rating from Niche. It’s one of the top 20 most diverse public elementary schools in North Carolina. The B-rated Paisley Magnet School is also an authorized International Baccalaureate school that teaches grades six through ten. Behind the school, beyond a small patch of woods, sits the volunteer-run Betty and Jim Holmes Food Bank Garden, where students learn about growing food while helping the garden’s mission to increase food security. Mount Tabor High receives a B-plus. Its competitive athletics program has won multiple state championships, most recently in Boys Cross Country in 2021. Saint Leo Catholic School, earning an A, and the A-plus-rated Summit School are nearby private options. The private Wake Forest University, known for its business, marketing and social sciences programs, is about 2 miles away. The public Winston-Salem State University, popular for its nursing program, is about 8 miles southeast.A blend of history and nature at Historic Bethabara Park
Town and Country Pool and Recreation Center is a favorite spot for local to beat the summer heat and watch the Typhoons Swim Team compete. The facility sits in the center of the neighborhood and is for members only. However, membership is not exclusive to Town and Country; people from all parts of Forsyth County are welcome to join. Polo Park is one of the closest parks to the neighborhood. “It has a shaded playground, a pool and a rec center,” Boneno says. “People can sign up for classes, and they have summer camps for the kids.” The park is adjacent to Speas Elementary, making it a popular after-school spot. Historic Bethabara Park is about 2 1/2 miles away, featuring a Moravian village dating to 1753. Visitors sometimes spot wildlife while exploring the park's hiking trails that wind through dense forest. Golfers can go for a round by joining two area clubs, Forsyth Country Club and Old Town Club, both of which feature 18-hole courses.Everyday essentials and international bites at Reynolda Commons
Town and Country offers various places to shop and eat within a mile of the neighborhood. Reynolda Commons has familiar stops to grab essentials, like Walgreens and CVS. Coppola's Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant serves staples, such as tortellini and baked ravioli, in its casual dining room adorned with string lights. Reynolda Manor, the area’s main shopping center, houses Lowes Food for grocery needs and Dewey’s Bakery, known for its freshly baked Moravian sugar cakes. The shopping center has a few chain restaurants, including Jimmy John’s and Papa John’s Pizza. Kotta Japanese Grill and Golden India offer international eats. Residents take the 5-mile drive to downtown Winston-Salem for boutique-style shopping and additional dining options.Getting around on Silas Creek Parkway
Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stops run along the eastern and southern borders of the neighborhood, with routes across the city and Forsyth County. However, car commuting is common. Silas Creek Parkway (State Route 67) is one of the main thoroughfares through Winston-Salem used to reach Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 421. The bike-friendly Reynolda Road heads into Downtown Winston-Salem, roughly 6 miles away. Piedmont Triad International Airport is a 30-mile drive east.
