Union Ridge
Suburban Neighborhood in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Forsyth County 27127
A cool market east of Peters Creek Parkway
The quiet, gently sloped residential streets of Union Ridge are lined with closely spaced Traditional-style homes from the early 2000s in some sections and Minimal Traditional cottages from the 1930s in others. There’s not much buildable land left in the neighborhood, and what little space there is between pockets of housing is filled with groves of trees and thick undergrowth of honeysuckle, ivy and ferns. Sidewalks are few and far between; most of the neatly maintained front lawns run straight to the narrow street. “I wouldn’t call this area walkable. It’s kind of in-between traditionally suburban and urban,” says Miller. He adds that the market has cooled lately. “If I were listing a property for somebody on this side of Peters Creek Parkway, I wouldn’t prepare them to be in a multiple offer situation. That’s not necessarily what’s going to happen in this neighborhood.” Prices start at around $125,000 and can climb to more than $350,000. “It’s not a buyers’ war like it was before, but the homes are still selling pretty quickly,” says de Moya.Big box shopping close to home, date night dining not far
For groceries and other everyday essentials, there’s a shopping center off Peters Creek Parkway about 2 miles west anchored by a Food Lion on one end and a Family Dollar on the other. In the same strip, residents can thrift for unique secondhand items at Trosa Thrift Store or get their hair and nails done. Several fast-food and fast-casual-style eateries are scattered around the area, too, from Zaxby’s and Papa Johns to Chipotle and Wendy’s. There’s also a dairiO nearby as well, which Miller recommends as one of his favorite places in town to get a hot dog. “It’s a fast-food place, just a locally owned fast-food place,” he says of the North Carolina-based chain. “There’s a Walmart Supercenter and a Lowe’s close by, but nothing stand-out, I would say, restaurant-wise.” Winston-Salem’s dining scene is concentrated in two places: the Stratford Road/Hanes Mall Boulevard business district on the west side and downtown. Miller’s personal favorite local eatery is Ryan’s Restaurant, an upscale steakhouse and seafood joint downtown. “It’s probably the nicest restaurant in town—it’s a special occasion kind of place.”Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools
Miller says that the schools serving Winston-Salem’s south side tend to be less highly rated than those serving the west side. “But this area is growing, and I hope that as it grows, newer schools will be built and we’ll see a change.” Konnoak Elementary, which earns a C-plus from Niche, is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. Philo-Hill Magnet Academy earns a C from Niche and is currently under construction ahead of the 2024-2025 school year. The middle school is getting an addition and extensive interior renovations. A new name will be unveiled along with the facelifts in the fall: Konnoak Middle. Parkland High School, an authorized IB World School, earns a B-minus from Niche. The Parkland boys’ track and field team has received national attention since member Antwan Hughes Jr. set a record as the fastest 16-year-old in the country at the 2022 Junior Olympics.Southside convenience between main thoroughfares
Interstate 285 and Peters Creek Parkway run north-south past the east and west sides of the neighborhood, respectively. Both main thoroughfares are less than 1.5 miles from most homes. South Main Street runs parallel to I-285 directly north into downtown, less than 5 miles away. “It’s convenient for people who commute into Winston for work,” says Miller. Two of the city’s major employers, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Wake Forest University, are less than 10 miles north of most homes.Recreation for ballplayers, swimmers, readers and more
At Parkland Park, about a mile north of home, locals can play tennis or practice their batting skills on the baseball/softball field. The park also has a classic playground and a couple of shady walking trails. Across Buchanan Street to the north, Parkland Pool is open during the summer months and offers free swim lessons to all Winston-Salem residents ages six months and up. For residents whose definition of fun involves air conditioning and books, the Southside Library is nearby, too. The Southside Book Club meets there once a month on Monday evenings to chat about new-release and bestseller adult fiction. South Little League practices and plays even closer to home, at Krites Field on West Clemmonsville Road.
