West Highlands
Suburban Neighborhood in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Forsyth County 27104, 27105
Midcentury in the north and century-old estates to the south
The sidewalk-lined streets in West Highlands' northern region are brimming with midcentury ranch styles and Cape Cod cottages. These two-to-three-bedroom homes typically cost between $150,000 and $250,000, a range similar to a Winston-Salem home’s average $250,000 selling price. Early 20th-century architecture abounds West Highlands’ winding roads in the southernmost area. Homebuyers will find Craftsman-style bungalows, Tudor estates, Colonial Revivals and Prairie properties. These four-to-five-bedroom homes on 1-acre plots can cost between $500,000 and $1 million. From half-circle driveways to two-car garages, parking options are aplenty here, no matter what decade the dwelling is from.Green space for tennis players, leisurely walkers and avid hikers
Located along Northwest Boulevard, Hanes Park has 20 tennis courts, three baseball diamonds, and a playground with three slides. Residents can also stroll amid stone footbridges and dogwood trees at Runnymede Park, a small green space between homes. Those looking for a more intense hike can hop on the Stuart & Emma Thomas Memorial Trail on Reynolda Road or Gillete Street. The two-and-a-half-mile dirt path passes wide-open pastures, fleabane wildflower fields and oak tree groves. Children can stop by Kimberly Park along Pittsburg Avenue to swim at the public pool or run around the updated playground.Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and Wake Forest University proximity
Children in West Highlands can attend Kimberly Park Elementary, which has an overall C grade from Niche. Next, they can go to B-minus-graded Wiley Magnet Middle. The school’s STEAM magnet has designated lab time and robotics classes. Lastly, students may attend B-plus-graded Richard J. Reynolds High on its original 1923 campus. With an impressive arts magnet, the school has ballet, sculpture-making and guitar classes. Just 3 miles north of the neighborhood, Wake University offers over 50 undergraduate degree programs. “This is a neighborhood with permanent residents. Students don’t typically live here,” says Huber. The fun doesn’t end with the Carolina Classic Fair
The neighborhood is also home to the 70-acre Winston-Salem Fairgrounds in its northeast corner. Around 325,000 people visit the parcel for the Carolina Classic Fair every October. They can play carnival games, watch tractor pulls and devour food like a burger stuffed between two Krispy Kreme donuts. Residents will also find plenty of activity here year-round like the Fairground Farmers Market held every Saturday. Ice skaters can enjoy the public rink in the Fairgrounds Annex, and skateboarders can ride the 325-foot-long pump track at the Fairgrounds Skate Park. West of the fairgrounds is the Lawrence Joel Veteran Memorial Coliseum. The 14,665-seat arena is home to the Wake Forest University men’s and women’s basketball teams, and it hosts a plethora of concerts with past performances including Wiz Khalifa and Bob Dylan.A convenient location near West 1st Street and U.S. Route 421
While residents often walk West Highlands’ wide streets and sidewalks, it is a car-dependent community. Drivers can quickly get to downtown Winston-Salem via a 2-mile trip east on West 1st Street. U.S. Route 421 spans the neighborhood's southern region, making Greensboro a 30-mile drive east. Bus riders will also find several Winston-Salem Transit Authority stops sprinkled across West 1st Street and University Parkway.A shopping destination along Stratford Road and Miller Street
West Highlands is less than 1 mile from the shopping mecca between Stratford Road and Miller Street. Residents can grab groceries from Publix or Whole Foods and eat from several locally owned restaurants. Since 1987, Midtown Café & Dessertery has been a go-to for all-day breakfast and scratch-made sweets like bourbon berry bread pudding or cream cheese brownies. Indian food lovers will also find exactly what they’re looking for at Nawab, a spot known for its tandoori chicken and vegetarian options. The neighborhood is less than 1 mile from the Thruway Center on Stratford Road. “It’s probably the most popular shopping center in town, so being near it is incredibly convenient,” says Huber. Shoppers can browse stores like J. Crew Factory, Champion and Lululemon.
