A historic district in one of the oldest areas of Winston-Salem, West Salem has its roots as a residential neighborhood in the industrialization that took place in the city at the turn of the 20th century. Winston-Salem needed housing for workers at nearby factories, and many of the houses still in the neighborhood today were built for that purpose. West Salem’s history, its charming but relatively affordable homes and the vibrant community continue to draw people into the growing neighborhood. “You could say there’s been gentrification, but there’s also been inclusion — at least, up to a point with pricing since that’s hurt locals everywhere,” says Teresa Blackburn, Lead Realtor for the TB Realty Team of Keller Williams Realty Elite, whose office is located in downtown Winston. “But there’s a lot of diversity in West Salem. It’s an eclectic community.”

Modern businesses in a vintage Winston-Salem setting
While West Salem still shows remnants of its industrial past, residents now have access to new local businesses. “There was industry here for a long time,” Blackburn says. “Those old warehouses are now housing cool new things like the farmers market.” Open every Saturday, the Cobblestone Farmers Market is just two blocks from the neighborhood and features local vendors selling fresh produce. Residents can also walk to nearby establishments on South Broad Street like East of Texas, an Austin-style barbecue joint, or Lesser-Known Beer Company. On the other hand, the west side of the neighborhood is home to the West Salem Shopping Center, with stores like Family Dollar and Napa Auto Parts. Residents have to drive a mile west to the Thruway Shopping Center for a Trader Joe’s and a Harris Teeter.

Rustic charm in older homes
Some of West Salem’s homes date back to as early as the turn of the 20th century, and most of them were built by the 1950s. The area still has some rustic charm dating back to its days as farmland for Old Salem. The homes contribute to the pastoral feel, with craftsman-influenced bungalows and cottages populating each block, as mature oak trees shade manicured lawns. These start in the upper $100,000s, while more spacious farmhouses sell closer to $400,000. The occasional open lot goes on the market as well for less than $100,000, for buyers looking to build their own home. Many recently sold lots now hold Modernist homes, going for as much as $600,000.

In the heart of West Salem, neighbors gather at Granville Park. Residents play tennis on the courts or bring their kids to climb on the castle-themed playground. On the south border of West Salem is an even larger recreation area — Washington Park has a dog park, baseball and softball fields and a basketball court, and neighborhood kids love the dinosaur playground. Washington Park connects to the Salem Creek Greenway, a 5.2-mile trail great for walking, jogging or biking that follows its namesake stream.

A walkable neighborhood southwest of Downtown Winston-Salem
West Salem lies close to the historic Salem side of Winston-Salem. Residents of the neighborhood can walk to numerous attractions, including the Old Salem Museum & Gardens. The neighborhood is also just a 1.5-mile drive from Downtown Winston-Salem and its vibrant businesses. While the WSTA bus system does serve the area, the intermittent service means many residents don’t rely on it for transportation; instead, most own cars. The nearby Salem Parkway gives residents convenient access across the Piedmont Triad, the local name for the cities of Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point.
