Ranch-style homes on hilly lots
Weston’s wide, unmarked and aging roads flow over the area’s hilly terrain. The single-family homes sit on sloping lots averaging just over an quarter of an acre — many of which back up to dense forest. Landscaping is minimal, with trimmed lawns and decorative bushes being the norm. Properties often include driveways of varying conditions, ranging from dirt and gravel to concrete and pavement. The typical floor plan is relatively compact, about half the U.S. average. Ranch-style homes, fitted with small covered front porches or carports, dominate the local architecture. Some are under 1,000 square feet, others a bit more sprawling. Cottages, some farmhouse-style, appear here and there, as does the occasional Cape Cod. Price tags hover around $120,000, a roughly $150,000 markdown from the typical Winston-Salem property. Move-in-ready houses start in the low $100,000s for ranch-style homes around 900 square feet. At the pricier end, new three-bedroom ramblers nearing 1,400 square feet can cost up to $230,000.One of Winston-Salem's only cricket pitches
Weston Park shares a name with the neighborhood and is a one- or two-block walk from dozens of residents. This green space centers around an unusual sight for American athletes: a cricket pitch, one of several used by the Carolina Cricket League. “We’re at Weston Park pretty much every weekend,” says T.J. Singh, the vice-captain of Fun Unlimited Cricket Club. “The neighborhood people come watch the games or play basketball. People are very friendly,” says Singh, who’s played here since 2010. More familiar facilities in the park include tennis courts, a rudimentary baseball diamond, a playground and a covered shelter. Winston-Salem’s South Little League holds practices and games at Krites Field, about 1 ½ miles away. The public Parkland Pool is a popular spot to cool off in the heat of the summer. Forsyth County Public Library’s Southside Branch is nearby, hosting regularly scheduled book clubs, ESL classes and programs for children.Students learn in their native language at Easton Elementary
A small portion of the neighborhood is zoned for Konnoak Elementary, which receives a C-plus rating from Niche. However, most homes are zoned for Easton Elementary. Earning a C, the school offers a dual language immersion program where classes are taught in Spanish, the native language for many students. English is slowly incorporated over time. The C-rated Konnoak Middle, formerly Philo-Hill Academy, is being renovated and is set to reopen in December 2024. In the meantime, students are learning at Main Street Academy in the South Park neighborhood. Parkland High gets a B-minus. Former Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Chief Communications Officer Brent Campbell says Parkland is the district’s only high school with four-year International Baccalaureate offerings. “Parkland is an I.B. World School, which means it has the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, Career-related Programme and Middle Years Programme,” he says. “That’s where the school really hangs its hat. It uses experiential and inquiry-based learning, teaching kids to reason at a high level and to ask and answer analytical questions. It also involves a heavy research component.” Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School, which is unrated, and Salem Academy, an A-plus all-girls boarding high school, are nearby private options.Quick access to Interstate 285 and I-40
With hilly terrain and few amenities within walking distance, Weston residents rely on private vehicles. Commuters can hop directly onto Interstate 285 from Clemmonsville Road to reach Downtown Winston-Salem, roughly 4 miles away. I-285 also connects to Interstate 40, which leads to Piedmont Triad International Airport, about 24 miles east. Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stops are nearby on Clemmonsville and Old Lexington roads, two bike-friendly streets in the area.Recognizable retailers and restaurants on Peters Creek Parkway
The business-heavy corridor along Peters Creek Parkway is a little over a mile west of the neighborhood. Walmart Supercenter, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Lidl are some of the prominent retailers. The area features many familiar restaurant chains, from Wendy’s and Zaxby’s to Chipotle and Dairi-O, a North Carolina favorite for burgers and shakes. El Rey Del Taco Taqueria is a local option, serving authentic Mexican cuisine in its small, colorful space. La Castellana Bakery sits next door, drawing in customers seeking classic Columbian treats. The Parkway Plaza shopping area, about 2 miles northwest, offers more retail and dining options, including a Compare Foods supermarket and Que Sazon, a food truck known for empanadas that sets up shop in the parking lot. A longer drive west down Interstate 40 takes residents to Hanes Mall, home to dozens of name-brand stores, including Belk, Forever 21 and Sephora.
