Red brick ranch-style homes by Wake Forest University
Most of Windsor Estates’ housing stock consists of red brick ranch-style homes built in the 1960s and 1970s. Still, split-levels, Cape Cods, cottages, Colonial Revivals and New Traditional builds are also available. Homes often rest on wooded, hilly lots ranging from 1/2 an acre to over 1 acre. These large, manicured lawns line wide paved roads with no sidewalks. Prices are typically under the national average of $554,000, ranging from $120,000 to $530,000, with most homes costing around $325,000.Most homebuyers live in the northern portion of the neighborhood. Jenny Boneno, branch manager at Reynolda Manor Branch Library, says that because Windsor Estates is about 1 mile away from Wake Forest University, there are a lot of apartment complexes in the heart of the neighborhood. “Any available housing near campus usually gets turned into student housing, too,” she says. While most of the neighborhood is at a low risk of flooding, homes along Mill and Monarcas creeks have an increased risk.

Historic Bethabara Park and the Bethabara Greenway
Inside Windsor Estates is the Historic Bethabara Park. Covering 183 acres, it features a reconstructed version of the first Moravian refugee settlement in North Carolina, dating to 1753. The park’s grounds are free of charge year-round. “People like to bring their kids here to run around in the open space. Closer up to the historic site, we have free hands-on demos about blacksmithing, woodworking, pottery and candle making,” says Diana Overbey, the Historic Parks Supervisor for Winston-Salem. She says residents are known to walk through the lush forest scenery for exercise and to spot wildlife. “We have birders who come out here all the time to see owls, herons and hawks. It’s a good spot for migratory birds because of the wetlands.” She adds that sometimes foxes, deer, beavers and river otters can also make appearances. Visitors often explore the park by walking, running and biking along Bethabara Greenway, which has access points throughout the neighborhood.Near the neighborhood, Hine Soccer Park hosts soccer practice, while Piney Grove Park is where local cricket players meet up. Polo Park, next to Speas Global Elementary, is popular with families for its playground, tennis courts, community center and outdoor pool. Wake Forest University offers peaceful strolls through the highly-designed Reynolda Gardens, which leads to the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, showcasing works from the mid-18th century to today. Several golf clubs are in the area, such as Forsyth Country Club and Old Town Club.

All of its students take part in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. Mount Tabor High gets a B-plus. Its varsity football team has seen recent success, winning its first-ever state championship in 2021. A few private and charter schools are nearby, including the unrated Cedar Forest Christian School and Forsyth Academy, a C-plus-rated public charter school serving kindergarten through eighth grades. The private Wake Forest University is less than a mile away. Serving a little over 9,000 students, the university is known for its business, medicine and law programs. It employs nearly 7,500 faculty and staff. Winston-Salem residents donning black and old gold often pour into Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium to watch the Demon Deacons play football.
The annual Apple Festival
As the trees around Windsor Estates begin to shift from green to the Autumn hues of orange, yellow and red, the neighborhood comes alive for the Apple Festival. Held in Historic Bethabara Park, the free one-day event celebrates the fruit's significance to the Moravian people who settled in Bethabara in the mid-1700s. When they arrived, the Moravians planted apple trees, covering the park’s rolling hills with orchards. Apples became a big part of the economy. The Apple Festival, held the first weekend of Fall, takes visitors back to this time in the park’s reconstructed Moravian village with vendors who sell homemade goods, Colonial-era games, live music and plenty of apples and apple-flavored dishes. Overbey says that in 2024, roughly 20,000 people attended the festival, the park’s biggest event of the year.
Getting around with Winston-Salem Transit Authority
Bethabara Greenway provides a pedestrian- and bike-friendly route through the neighborhood. Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stops dot Bethabara, Reynolda and Woods roads, offering rides to destinations around the city. However, many residents commute by car; Silas Creek Parkway, or State Route 67, is west of Windsor Estates and is one of the main thoroughfares through Winston-Salem used to reach Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 421. Piedmont Triad International Airport is a 30-mile drive east for trips out of state.Pine Ridge Plaza, Dewey’s Bakery and Campus Gas
Pine Ridge Plaza is the neighborhood shopping center anchored by Harris Teeter. Chain restaurants, such as Panera Bread, Subway and Cookout, are mixed in with local establishments, like Mi Pueblo Mexican Grill and Mama Zoe’s, a beloved brunch spot serving Southern cuisine. The Reynolda Manor shopping center sits across the street, hosting Lowes Foods, Dollar Tree and Dewey's Bakery, a staple drawing in customers for its Moravian cookies since 1930. Campus Gas, a gas station turned bar and restaurant, sits close to Wake Forest University. Decorated with Deacons decor, the bar is busy on game days, pairing handheld bites with craft beer. Retailers, from Target and Walmart Neighborhood Market to the Home Depot and Burlington, fill shopping centers along University Parkway. Downtown Winston-Salem is a little over 5 miles away for boutique shopping and nightlife, while Hanes Mall, featuring dozens of name-brand stores, is roughly a 6 ½-mile drive south.
