Larger lots in the small village of Wintersville
Wintersville, a village of nearly 4,000 residents, mostly serves as a bedroom community for neighboring Steubenville, home to Franciscan University of Steubenville. Realtor Julia Duff with Cedar One Realty says the university has been expanding in recent years and bringing new families to both Steubenville and Wintersville. “It’s a lot of Italian families and a lot of big families because of the Catholic community,” she says. These families need space to spread out, and Wintersville – less than 5 miles from Steubenville – offers larger lot sizes and homes. Duff explains that since Steubenville used to be a heavily populated mill town, “they would build the houses right on top of each other,” she says. “Wintersville’s more country, more rural.”
Ranch-style, bi-level and New Traditional homes
Ranch-style, bi-level and New Traditional homes are common in Wintersville. The average home value in Wintersville is lower than the average for the Weirton-Steubenville metro area. Most prices range from $50,000 to $400,000. “Our market is a buyers’ market right now,” Duff says. “A lot of the offers coming in are under asking price or at asking price.” Residential streets often lack sidewalks and curbs. Compared to Steubenville, homes in Wintersville have bigger yards.
Indian Creek Local School District and Steubenville’s universities
Indian Creek Local School District gets an overall B-minus grade from Niche. Cross Creek Elementary and Indian Creek Middle get C-pluses, and Indian Creek High School gets a B-minus. In 2025, Special Olympics North America recognized Indian Creek High School as a National Banner School and gave it a spot on the ESPN Honor Roll. It was the only school in Ohio to earn this title. Less than 5 miles away, Steubenville is home to two universities. Franciscan University of Steubenville is a Catholic university enrolling nearly 4,000 students annually. Duff says that Franciscan University has been expanding in recent years, opening new restaurants, dorms, athletic facilities and churches, attracting more families to the area. The College of St. Joseph the Worker is a low-cost Catholic college where students learn both theology and trades. Since opening in 2024, the College of St. Joseph the Worker has expanded higher education opportunities for the community.
