Shore Acres’ proximity to Lake Michigan's shore gives residents a variety of leisure options on the water and dry land. North Point Beach and Winthrop Harbor Beach both overlook the lake with sandy shores and broad views of the horizon. The North Point Marina offers short-term and seasonal slip rentals for boat owners, boat and Sea-Doo rentals, dry storage for boats and a pool. Closer to home, Village Park has tennis and basketball courts, a skate park, three baseball diamonds and a playground. Monthly teen dances and youth basketball programs are available at the Schlader Recreation Center within the park. To the west of the neighborhood, Shepherd’s Crook Golf Course lets residents enjoy days on the green with an 18-hole layout and an onsite restaurant.

Learning at Winthrop Harbor schools
Young students in Shore Acres attend schools in Winthrop Harbor School District 1. Kids can attend Westfield School from pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 14:1 and holds a B-minus grade on Niche. North Prairie Junior High School holds a C-plus grade. Zion-Benton Township High School offers 44 extracurricular programs, including dedicated clubs for bass fishing, performing arts, Junior ROTC teams and Dungeons & Dragons. The school earns a B-minus grade on Niche.
Zion-Benton Township High School serves approximately 2200 students.

Winthrop Harbor residents are connected to the Metra rail system through the town’s railway station near 7th Street, less than a mile from the neighborhood’s east side. Waukegan is a 15-minute train ride away, while trips to Chicago generally take about an hour and a half. The nearest hospital, Vista Medical Center East, is about 10 miles south of the neighborhood. For trips beyond the Chicago area, Chicago O’Hare International Airport is about 43 miles south, while Chicago Midway International Airport is about 72 miles south.
