City and ocean views
Those who consider living along Winthrop’s coastline, don't have to choose between seascape or cityscape. Real estate professional Seth Williams, founder of Reference Real Estate, says this area, with its views of Boston and the ocean, is becoming more attractive to buyers all the time. “Homes here are pretty affordable. Plus, you’re on the coast,” Williams says. Even though there’s some airplane noise from Logan, homes still tend to “fly” right off the market in Winthrop.
The coastline of Winthrop Beach is a truly serene place to go and relax or read a book.

Converted vintage homes
In Winthrop Beach, homebuyers can expect to find converted condominiums and multifamily homes tightly packed along the beach area’s one-way streets. There are 1920s low-rise buildings with one-bedroom units on Trident Avenue and two-family converted colonial properties from the late 1800s and early 1900s on Seafoam Avenue. Shirley Street is home to more recently built condominiums, including three-bedroom condos that offer views of the waterfront and the skyline. Home sizes range from around 700 to 2,700 square feet, and prices fall between $320,000 and $900,000. “You’re going to find a few family investment homes here, too,” Williams says.
A varying amount of architectura styles can be found on the many side streets of Winthrop Beach.

Above-average school ratings
Winthrop Public Schools, which is comprised of four schools, has a B+ rating from Niche. At Arthur T. Cummings Elementary, rated a B-minus, students and teachers benefit from an active parent and teacher organization that helps raise funds through 50/50 raffles and restaurant nights. It’s common in Winthrop for restaurants such as La Siesta, a family-owned Mexican eatery on Woodside Avenue, to partner with the local schools for special restaurant nights. After Cummings Elementary, students move to Winthrop Middle and then Winthrop High School, both of which earn a B from Niche.
D'Parma is a must try for Italian food when visiting Winthrop Beach.
Mangia at local Italian restaurants
“The beach area also has a lot of great Italian spots,” Williams says. Café Rossetti’s, located on Winthrop Shore Drive, serves a variety of pasta and seafood dishes. D’Parma, a family-run Italian restaurant on Shirley Street, also offers pasta varieties, as well as hot and cold subs. D&T Market, a small, locally-owned store with a lot of options, is a convenient destination for grabbing a few essentials.
Beach fun anytime
Long-time residents, including Betsy Shane, executive director of Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, appreciate Winthrop’s quaint, coastal vibe along with its proximity to Boston. “It’s a small town, and that can be a really nice feeling,” Shane says. She says another perk to living on Winthrop’s coast is being able to enjoy the beach, even on a workday. Winthrop Beach is popular for swimming, paddleboarding and fishing. Folks also enjoy gazing overhead at the planes departing Logan.
The Winthrop Beach Reservation is a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic on the weekend.
Winthrop Beach offers plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the water.

Vibrant boating community
Betsy Shane notes that Winthrop is a boating community, where folks frequently head out on the water for the day from one of the town’s boat ramps or yacht clubs. Another familiar sight is the Winthrop Ferry, a seasonal option for those who want to ride the boat into Boston instead of taking the nearby Blue Line.
Winthrop is a small town that radiates vacation vibes regardless of the season. Here residents enjoy the ocean and a view of Boston’s skyline in one of the more affordable and perhaps underrated coastal areas around.
Winthrop Beach is known for it's proximity to Boston but also for being a warm coastal town.
When in Winthrop Beach the local ferry conveniently runs often into the city.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
