History meets modernity in Brass City
In the 19th century, Waterbury, Connecticut, was widely known as the brass capital of the world. The demand for brass buttons fueled by the outbreak of the Civil War made it a valuable commodity, and the city flourished. But following World War II, other materials began replacing it. By the 1970s, Waterbury’s major brass producers closed, but locals still refer to it as Brass City. Today, Waterbury has reinvented itself from its antebellum roots. “Waterbury is a big metropolis,” says Broker Pat Malek. “It’s very developed and close to the interstate.” At the same time, though, Waterbury retains its small-town New England ethos. “It’s an urban city, but you know your neighbors here,” says Jessie Svedrovic of the Silas Bronson Library. “You see the same people every day, but at the same time, there is such diversity and culture here.”
The town green and the great outdoors
The Downtown Waterbury Historic District is the city’s commercial and cultural hub. It extends outward from Waterbury Green, the original town commons dating back to Waterbury’s founding in 1686. The Green is a popular spot for relaxation and play in the heart of the bustling city, with historical monuments along its circuitous walking paths. A little further from downtown is East Mountain Park, where visitors will find a playground, a picnic pavilion, a basketball court, soccer fields, baseball diamonds and two tennis courts. Next to East Mountain Park is the East Mountain Golf Course, a public 18-hole course that is challenging to both the novice and the seasoned golfer.
Waterbury, Connecticut, has transformed from a brass industry hub to a vibrant urban city.

Cultural venues make the arts accessible
Just down the street from Waterbury Green is the City Youth Theater, a nonprofit dedicated to the arts through workshops, classes, summer camps and productions starring elementary through middle school-aged actors. Waterbury is also home to the Palace Theater, a widely hailed performance venue. In addition to hosting such luminaries as Harry Houdini, Frank Sinatra and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Palace Theater is the first North American venue where Freddy Mercury asked whether this was "real life" or "just fantasy." On February 14, 1975, Queen performed their new song, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” for the first time in the United States.
Waterbury Green is surrounded by historical buildings, including the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, dedicated in 1928 and modeled after the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. Across the street is St. John’s Episcopal Church, built in 1873. Adjacent to Waterbury Green is the Mattatuck Museum, featuring a comprehensive collection of artwork and other cultural artifacts that reflect the history of the Naugatuck Valley and the artists of Connecticut.
