Picturesque farmland

“It’s just constant beautiful rolling hills of farmland.” Matt Wolf from RE/MAX of Reading has lived and sold houses in the Heidelberg area since 2002. “Having lived in the neighborhood for so long, sometimes I forget how picturesque the typography is,” Wolf says. “The area is still influenced by its Pennsylvania Dutch history. Farming and the East Penn Manufacturing Company are the major employers here.” Heidelburg is a rural neighborhood outside of Reading, PA. The area is mostly farmland, except for the small town of Womelsdorf. “Womelsdorf is this quant little town, there’s not a whole lot of commercial activity, you’ve got a grocery store, hardware store and some fast-food joints.” The Blue Marsh Lake is located 12 miles north of the neighborhood and is a major recreational attraction.

Classic farmhouses and rolling hills

The housing market in Heidelberg is limited due to the low population density. There are currently only two houses for sale, both of them being small townhouses located within the Womelsdorf town area. Outside of the town, you have large Colonial and Farmhouse-style homes set across multi-acre properties. Many houses come equipped with a long private driveway and a barn. House prices range from $150,000 to $350,000, with a recently sold two-story colonial house closing for $240,000. “U.S. Route 422 runs through the neighborhood and most of the new developments are built along this street. There is very little building going on in the area” says Wolf. “What’s cool is that there are still some stone houses standing from the late 1700s.”

Womelsdorf shops

DG Market is the grocery store conveniently located within walking distance for many residents of Womelsdorf. P&J Pizza is the Friday night pizza destination for locals. The Messy Pig BBQ Company leaves customers with sticky fingers and full bellies after they eat their fix of classic American dishes. The closest major city is Reading, which is located over 16 miles away. Womelsdorf lacks a full range of essential amenities, so residents will have to travel into Reading for access to a hospital and major shopping options.

Conrad Weiser's schools

Conrad Weiser was pioneer and among the first generation of Pennsylvania Dutch settlers. Born in Germany in 1696, Weiser’s family came to the New World for opportunity. After living with the native Mohawk Tribe for a year, Weiser became a diplomat and emissary between the Pennsylvania colony and the native tribes. Today, Conrad Weiser is honored with the namesake of three schools in Heidelberg. Conrad Weiser West Elementary School scores a C-plus on Niche. Conrad Weiser Middle School picks up a B-minus rating on Niche. At Conrad Weiser High School, athletes don classic navy, white and silver uniforms. The school scores a B rating on Niche and offers advanced placement courses for its students. The campus offers students a football stadium, four baseball diamonds, two soccer fields and even supports a varsity bowling team.

Blue Marsh Lake

The Army Corps of Engineers maintains the Blue Marsh Lake and nearby PA State Game Lands Number 280. The lake is accessible via a 20-minute drive north of Heidelberg. With over 1,147 acres of water, Blue Marsh Lake is the preferred location among locals for fishing, swimming and boating. The lake has a swim beach with a public pavilion and a sectioned off portion of water. There are 36 miles of hiking trails surrounding the lake. Every Fourth of July, residents make use of the ample grassland to host lakeside picnics and barbeques. The hunting grounds around the lake are known for being a popular pheasant-hunting area. Other game species include deer, rabbits, waterfowl and mourning doves. Womelsdorf Park is the only public park in the neighborhood and features a public-use pavilion. Nearby Robesonia Playground features two baseball diamonds.
