Woodlawn Park is a little town with a surprising history and connection to Louisville’s famous horse races. It was once home to the Woodlawn Race Course, which first held races in 1859, almost two decades before the Kentucky Derby began, but today the only thing that remains is a historical marker located near City Hall on Westport Road. After the races ended, the area surrounding what is now Woodlawn Park slowly transformed from rural to residential and was officially declared a city in 1954. Streets in Woodlawn Park have a speed limit of 25 and are shaded by mature trees, and some residents simply have to open the front door to get mail.
A historical marker recounts Woodlawn's past as a thoroughbred racetrack.
The Woodlawn neighborhood is located in eastern Louisville.
