A secluded New England retreat worth seeking
When successful New York businessman Henry Bowen built a pink summer home in the countryside of Woodstock, he started a trend that continues in the Connecticut town today. Visitors and transplants from across the Northeast, particularly New York, head to the vacation rentals and sprawling estates dotted among the dairy farms and wineries of this rural community. Woodstock lies in the Quiet Corner, the segment of northeastern Connecticut known for its distance from any major cities. Natural beauty and seclusion, rather than an exhilarating urban lifestyle, draw residents to Woodstock, explains Michael Deyorio. Deyorio is a Realtor at CR Premier Properties who moved to Woodstock in 1979. “It’s a long road to get anywhere, but people like that. I drive an hour to work just to live in Woodstock.”

Lakeside homes and countryside retreats in Woodstock
Homes are spread out among Woodstock’s large land area, which ranks second among Connecticut towns. The median lot is nearly two acres, though numerous homes occupy estates of 50 to 100 acres. Some of these lavish retreats come with their own airfield or medieval moat and cost upward of $2 million. Woodstock’s housing market has attracted a few actors over the years, including the late Carroll Spinney, who played Big Bird on Sesame Street for nearly 50 years. Waterfront homes are common as well, built along Woodstock’s collection of lakes and large ponds. The average home value is roughly $430,000, $100,000 more than the average value across Windham County. “It’s somewhat expensive to live here, but it’s worth it,” Deyorio says.

Waterfront fun at Crystal Pond and Roseland Lake
Woodstock’s parks make the most of the town’s peppering of lakes and ponds. For example, Crystal Pond Park encourages visitors to bring their kayaks and canoes to paddle around Crystal Pond, nearly as expansive as a lake. The park is open year-round, with boating and swimming in the warm months transitioning to ice skating and cross-country skiing in the winter. Though Roseland Park rests on the shore of Roseland Lake, swimming isn’t allowed. Instead, paddlers skim across the surface of the lake while kids frolic on the playground and little league games play out on the baseball field.

A Connecticut antiquing destination
Antique shops and fresh food marketplaces define Woodstock’s business sector. Locals and tourists frequent the remote boutiques and emporiums spread across town, says Deyorio, who also serves as vice president of the Woodstock Business Association. They shop for vintage furniture at The Rusty Relic, browse antique home décor at The Olde Pineapple and pick up beef or milk straight from the farm at Elm Farm’s Farm to Table Market. Fruits and vegetables are on sale at Woodstock Orchards produce market, but residents need to drive to the town of Putnam to shop at a supermarket, such as Price Chopper. The nearest full-service hospital is UMass Memorial-Harrington Hospital, 10 miles away.

Built in 1846, Roseland Cottage today hosts an annual arts festival in Woodstock.
Roseland Cottage: A venue fit for a president
Taylor Brooke Winery hosts gatherings and celebrations several times a week all year, from indoor cornhole matches to live music performances. Of course, the vineyard’s wines often are incorporated into events, such as the December Sip & Shop Holiday Market. Roseland Cottage, Henry Bowen’s Gothic Revival estate visited by four U.S. presidents, hosts 150 artisans from across New England at the annual Roseland Cottage Fine Arts & Craft Festival.
Boston and Worcester in reach
Seclusion is part of Woodstock’s appeal, but it’s a simple drive to several New England cities. Highways such as Connecticut Routes 169 and 171, as well as nearby Interstate 395, put drivers on the paths to Worcester 30 miles to the north; Boston, 70 miles to the northeast; or Hartford, 45 miles west. Travelers can catch planes at Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport. 40 miles away in Warwick, but Boston Logan International Airport offers more flight options.
