Fort Valley's location between the Shenandoah River and a national forest
Homebuyers and tourists head to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley for the quiet, rural atmosphere. The Blue Ridge Mountains’ rambling landscape creates winding roads and thick forests perfect for hiking and camping or private properties with multiple acres to spread out. In Fort Valley, the landscape feels even quieter, where the community is bracketed by the North Fork Shenandoah River on one side and the George Washington National Forest on the other. “When my parents bought land here in the 60s, it was just way out of the Washington area and it was cheap,” says Realtor Martha Buracker with Weichert Realtors. “Now, it’s more expensive just because of the privacy, the scenic beauty and the proximity to the outdoor activities.” Fort Valley receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.
Hiking to mountain overlooks and boating on the Shenandoah River
George Washington National Forest surrounds the area, where locals and tourists can hike to overlooks like Buzzard Rock and Signal Knob for great views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley. The Passage Creek goes through the forest and the rest of the Fort Valley Area, stocked with trout. Seven Bends State Park sits along the North Fork Shenandoah River, where people can launch watercraft from the public boat ramps. There are also about 9 miles of trails through the park and along the river. The Fort Valley’s wooded, hilly terrain also makes the area popular with horseback riding, offered at ranches like Secret Passage Ranch and Fort Valley Ranch.
Properties hidden by the forest and open fields with barns in Fort Valley
Hidden down private drives off Fort Valley’s winding streets, New Traditionals, bungalows, farmhouses, raised ranches and ranch-style homes make up the area’s diverse housing stock. Some areas are more private, where the forest hugs the road and blocks views of properties. Alternatively, other areas are more open, where horses graze on rolling hills and barns overlook properties. “There are lots of little farmsteads and lots of people trying to be more healthy and live off the land,” Buracker says. Most homes range from $230,000 to $540,000, but properties offering over 20 acres of land might sell between $650,000 and $780,000.
Seasonal road blockages mean differing routes from Fort Valley to Woodstock
Fort Valley’s remote location between the national forest and the Shenandoah River means that there’s limited traffic through the area, but also that its farther from bigger towns than other Shenandoah Valley communities. Woodstock is the closest town. In the summer, residents can take Woodstock Tower Road into town, making the trip about 9 miles. However, the road closes January through April or during adverse weather, so people instead must take Fort Valley Road, which instead makes Woodstock about 19 miles away. Shenandoah Memorial Hospital is also in Woodstock. Interstates 66 and 81 both go around the community, far enough to maintain a quiet environment unbothered by traffic. “We’re close enough to the Washington area, and with the Interstate, we can get to where you need to be unless you have to catch a plane to get there,” Buracker says. Dulles International Airport is 72 from Fort Valley.
Vineyards with river views and nearby grocery options in Woodstock
The scenic landscape makes the Shenandoah Valley popular for wineries. Muse Vineyards overlooks the North Fork Shenandoah River, offering indoor dining rooms and decks with umbrellas over the tables. In addition to the cheese boards and appetizers, it also has fireside suppers on Friday and Sunday evenings and Sunday brunch. More dining options are available in Luray and Woodstock. Spring House Tavern in Woodstock has a wooden hanging sign outside, like a true English tavern. It serves American fare, like burgers, sandwiches and steaks. Fort Valley Convenience Store is the area’s only grocery option, but it has a full deli and bakery section. It also sells firewood and licenses for hunting and off-road vehicles. For more grocery options, Food Lion and Walmart are both in Woodstock, 11 miles away long Woodstock Tower Road or 18 miles away along Edinburgh Gap Road.
