Urban Worcester living along Lincoln Street
With its local storefronts, delis and steepled churches lining Lincoln Street, and triple-deckers and colonial homes dotting residential roads, Brittan Square combines elements of urban and suburban Worcester just 2 miles from downtown. "Its proximity makes it a great option for people looking to live close to downtown without paying the price premium they're paying in the immediate downtown area," says Erin Zamarro, associate broker at Coldwell Banker Commercial NRT. "It's a mix of families and people who are connected to the hospital system and pharmacy school. You can walk to the pharmacy school from Brittan Square."
Single- and multi-family homes dating to the 1800s
Brittan Square has a variety of homes, including single- and multi-family homes and duplexes with modest lawns on grid-style streets with both urban and suburban elements. "It's an older part of the city. A lot of our housing stock is really old. You have a lot of multi-family houses – triple-deckers – built somewhere between the 1880s and 1920, and there's a lot of Victorian styles scattered all over the neighborhood," Zamarro says. "There are some houses that've been fixed up and restored and are beautiful that are used for commercial and residential purposes, and some have been turned into multi-family homes." The neighborhood also has ranches and Colonial-style houses. Single-family homes typically range from $400,000 to $500,000, while multi-family homes usually cost between $500,000 and $650,000.
Green Hill Park and the East-West Trail
Green Hill Park, the largest park in Worcester, borders Bittan Square on the east. This nearly 500-acre park has a golf course, athletic fields, playgrounds, ponds, an arboretum and the Barnyard Zoo. In the winter, families congregate at Green Hill Park to sled down its sloping terrain. Green Hill is also a stop on the East-West Trail, a 14-mile trail that connects Worcester's seven hills. "It kind of tucked away. You have to look for the park almost, but it's huge. There's a lot of open space for people to hang out," Zamarro says. "It's kind of set on top of a hill, so people tend to drive there."
Local businesses along Lincoln Street and Lincoln Plaza
Locals will find local businesses, churches and doctor's offices along Lincoln Street, such as Magic Razor Touch Barbershop, Family Mini Mart, Adams Square Baptist Church, St. Bernards Church, and Salt & Pepper, a laid-back spot serving omelets, pancakes and breakfast platters. For more extensive errands, Brittan Square residents are just south of Lincoln Plaza, the area's major shopping center with big box stores like Target, Aldi, TJ Maxx & HomeGoods, and Lowe's. The area also has chain restaurants such as Five Guys and Dunkin', a Massachusetts favorite.
Students attend Worcester schools with arts programs
Students in Brittan Square usually attend schools in the next neighborhood over, and may start at the Wawecus Road School for kindergarten through sixth grade. The school earned a C grade from Niche. Older students may continue to Burncoat Middle School and Burncoat Senior High School, both of which earned C-plus grades from Niche. Burnocat Middle and High Schools have several arts magnet programs for students to choose from, including media arts, visual arts, theater, dance and music.
Events at Green Hill Park and downtown Worcester
In addition to serving as the area's primary recreation area, Green Hill Park occasionally hosts events, including the Bring the Heat Car show in May, featuring old school cars and motorcycles and raising money for charity. Brittan Square residents head down Lincoln Street to downtown Worcester for the city's best venues and amenities. Here, residents can immerse themselves in the sounds of the symphony at Hanover Hall, ice skate in the brisk winter breeze at Worcester Common or catch a minor league baseball game at Polar Park, home to the Worcester Red Sox.
Commuting around Worcester from Brittan Square
Brittan Square offers convenience to Worcester's major employers. "If you wanted to get to work by foot or bus, you can definitely do that from Brittan Square," Zamarro says. "It's close to UMass Memorial Hospital, Mass College of Pharmacy, and there's great access to I-290 and I-190. It's also near Gateway Park, a research and development park." Commuters can also hop on the commuter rail to Boston via the nearby Worcester Union Station. Brittan Square has a CAP Index score of 6, indicating a slightly higher risk of crime in the area compared to the U.S. average.
