An accessible urban residential district
Franklin Plantation is an urban Worcester neighborhood known for a laid-back atmosphere. Sitting along Worcester Restaurant Row, the area is growing in diversity with young families moving from all around the country due to the relative affordability and reasonable commute. Just north of the neighborhood are UMass Memorial Medical Center Hospital and UMass Chan Medical School, the commonwealth’s public medical education institution. The area features classical-style homes on maintained streets with plenty of dining and shopping opportunities available. The MBTA and Worcester’s public bus system make transportation accessible and easy for residents. The 35-mile commute to Boston takes around an hour and a half by train and multiple bus stops sitting along each street. Plenty of dining options are available along Shrewsbury Street, spots to hang out like cafes and bars and a woodland oasis at Crow Hill Conservation Restriction.
UMass Chan Medical School is the only public academic health sciences center in the Commonwealth, and the first of its kind.

Renovated classical homes on urban streets
Well-maintained main roads lead to narrow but easily walkable side streets in the long stretch of urban housing. Small front gardens reach barely a few yards away from doorsteps but still offer a nice amount of yard space for many neighbors to plant flower gardens, trees and bushes. Multi-family buildings stack three or more units into the colonial revival homes common to Massachusetts and family homes sit alongside them, often classical-style bungalows and foursquares. Most of the buildings in the area were built in the early 1900s, showcasing the neighborhood's history even through the renovated properties which often keep key features like brick finishes and colonial-style window shudders and awnings. “These buildings are being restored beautifully, and it gives a good mix of family homes and rental options for people moving in,” said Christine Najem, a realtor and Worcester resident since 2001. While properties in the area range from $150,000 to $600,000, most of the single-family homes are priced under $300,000, while the multi-family properties can be found for higher prices.
