Renovated classical homes on urban streets
Well-maintained main roads lead to narrow but easily walkable side streets in the long stretch of urban housing. Small front gardens reach barely a few yards away from doorsteps but still offer a nice amount of yard space for many neighbors to plant flower gardens, trees and bushes. Multi-family buildings stack three or more units into the colonial revival homes common to Massachusetts and family homes sit alongside them, often classical-style bungalows and foursquares. Most of the buildings in the area were built in the early 1900s, showcasing the neighborhood's history even through the renovated properties which often keep key features like brick finishes and colonial-style window shudders and awnings. “These buildings are being restored beautifully, and it gives a good mix of family homes and rental options for people moving in,” said Christine Najem, a realtor and Worcester resident since 2001. While properties in the area range from $150,000 to $600,000, most of the single-family homes are priced under $300,000, while the multi-family properties can be found for higher prices.Biliteracy programs at Worcester Public Schools
Residents can attend Worcester Public Schools, a district that features a dual language program to promote biliteracy where students can earn a Seal of Biliteracy after learning two or more languages. Grafton Street Elementary School and Worcester East Middle School are both rated C on Niche.com. North High School is rated C-plus and has a dual enrollment college program for its students.Classic bars and restaurants along Shrewsbury Street
Since it sits along Worcester’s restaurant row, otherwise known as Shrewsbury Street, Franklin Plantation hardly lacks options when it comes to popular dining and shopping spots. Dino’s Ristorante Italiano is a popular sit-down spot for tiramisu and pasta, and Belsito's Deli offers classic deli-style sandwiches through their pick-up window. Vincent’s is an eclectic bar featuring live music, cocktails and vintage decor like taxidermied deer and birds, while Cafe Reyes offers a cheap, Cuban-centric brunch spot. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods sit just down the street for convenient and popular shopping options.Access to Interstate 290
Backing straight up to Interstate 290, Franklin Plantation is a neighborhood that, much like the rest of Worcester, provides an accessible commute to the rest of Massachusetts. “A lot of people are moving to Worcester because it’s more affordable, and the transportation system just makes it more accessible for young professionals,” says Najem. Bus stops line Shrewsbury Street across Worcester. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority offers a commuter rail that takes riders 35 miles from Worcester to Boston in an hour and 20-minute, which is a relatively short commute for the region. UMass Memorial Medical Center hospital sits just under a mile away, right next to UMass Chan Medical School, the commonwealth’s public medical education institution.Green walking trails at Crow Hill Conservation
Holmes Field serves as a community recreational area, with an accessible playground with rubber mulch for kids to run and play in and a pickleball court for public use. It features a baseball diamond, though residents can also play baseball at Harrington Field and enjoy a pine-tree-shaded playground. Crow Hill Conservation Restriction serves as a woodland escape within the city and is a popular area for locals to walk their dogs and get a taste of the great outdoors near urban life. The 64-acre black oak forest has three trails for locals to walk along where they can see the painted turtles by the pond or visit with the rafter of wild turkeys that frequent the Ecotarium in the evening.
