Suburban streets on the outer fringes of Worcester
Hamilton is a suburban neighborhood on the eastern outskirts of Worcester, the second-most populous city in Massachusetts. The area is just west of Lake Quinsigamond, where the chatter of beachgoers, splashes of swimmers and revving of small motorboats fill the air during summer months. Locals can also visit the EcoTarium to immerse themselves in science, or cheer on the Worcester WooSox at Polar Park just across the highway. “Hamilton is great,” says Joseph Abramoff, an associate broker with BA Property and Lifestyle Advisors. “You have a really nice mix of all the cultures of Worcester over there represented very well, whether it’s restaurants like Italian eateries and a Middle Eastern bakery. Worcester is a city with a lot of different cultures.” The proximity to the lake, downtown Worcester and an array of restaurants on the surrounding streets balances out with the quiet, tree-lined residential streets within Hamilton.

Older homes on suburban streets in Hamilton
The Hamilton neighborhood is composed primarily of single-family homes, with some multi-family homes interspersed throughout, and most residences in the neighborhood date to the early 20th century. “We’re an older New England city,” Abramoff says. “Most of our housing stock is older. You’ll have a lot of split-levels and colonial-style homes, and there are certainly some bigger homes here and there.” Raised-ranch and ranch-style homes are also common. Single-family homes range from $350,000 to $600,000, depending on size, while multi-family properties usually cost between $650,000 and $750,000. “$350,000 is the lower end, but starter homes are typically $400,000 to $500,000, depending on how updated they are,” Abramoff says. Hamilton has a CAP crime score of 5 out of 10, slightly above the national average of 4.

Sprawling parks and lakes in the Worcester area
Much like the Worcester as a whole, Hamilton offers abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. Within the neighborhood, Crow Hill Conservation Restriction encompasses over 60 acres and has several trails. Harrington Field sits in the neighborhood as well and offers multiple baseball and softball diamonds, playing host to area Little League teams. Holmes Field is located just east of Hamilton and has a baseball field, playground and hybrid tennis/pickleball courts. North of the neighborhood, Green Hill Park spans nearly 500 acres and has sports facilities, open green space and picnic spots.
The four-mile-long Lake Quinsigamond sits just east of Hamilton, serving as a hub of aquatic recreation for the area. The lake is known as a prime spot for rowing: “Lake Quinsigamond is renowned for its rowing, so there are big regattas and colleges use it for crew,” Abramoff says. About half a dozen regattas take place on the water each year, with many weekends featuring racing in the spring. In addition to activities available on the lake, there are also a number of facilities at Quinsigamond State Park and around its perimeter. “There is a soccer field, football field, tennis courts, a baseball field and a little beach with lifeguards,” Abramoff says. “There’s an indoor skating rink with hockey and everything across the street. The water is fully recreational, certainly for motorboats, and people have pontoon boats too. It’s nice on a summer day.” Motorboats are permitted within certain guidelines, and locals can also swim, sail, fish and grill on and near the lake. The grounds also have trails for hikers, and the area accommodates skiing in the winter.

Taking in nature, baseball games and food festivals
Within Hamilton, the EcoTarium offers exhibits on natural history, outer space and the environment. “The EcoTarium is huge,” Abramoff says. “It’s a great thing to be able to have locally. It’s a huge draw, people love it and it’s a way to connect the city’s kids to science. There’s biology and really all elements of science. They have some animals there. It’s really cool.” Sports fans, meanwhile, are less than 3 miles from Polar Park, home of the Worcester WooSox, the Triple A-affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. “The stadium is relatively easily accessible and a cool draw,” Abramoff says. “It’s injected some nightlife and restaurants, and obviously the team itself is just another draw of the city.” Every summer, look forward to the annual Taste of Shrewsbury Street food festival, a highlight of the Worcester calendar. “They shut down part of the street and restaurants set up outside,” Abramoff says.

Locals can head north of the neighborhood to where Route 9 and Shrewsbury Street intersect for local restaurants. “You have a ton of stuff on Route 9 in the Shrewsbury area,” Abramoff says. “You really have everything you’re looking for within 15-to-20 minutes. Rosalina’s Kitchen has been on Hamilton Street forever and has home-cooked Italian food. George’s Bakery is right there, too, and has great hummus and pita.” Pho Sure serves Vietnamese food, while Café Reyes prepares Cuban dishes. Other nearby stops include Belsito’s Deli, on the west side of Hamilton, and Vintage Grille & Gourmet Pizza on Shrewsbury. Price Chopper and Stop & Shop are both situated about 2 miles south of central Hamilton.

Boston sits over 40 miles east of the neighborhood. “It’s a straight shot 50 or so miles to Boston,” Abramoff says. “You might hit a couple red lights and traffic here and there, but there’s a few ways to get there from here. Worcester has become an attractive place for the people working in the Metro West area. It’s not abnormal here to commute, but not every day.” Worcester Regional Transit Authority buses run along Hamilton Street on the south side and Belmont Street, also designated as Route 9, to the north. On-ramps to Interstate 290 sit about 2 miles west. UMass Memorial Medical Campus sits about 2 miles north of the neighborhood.
