What streets look like and homes cost in Elm Park
College-age renters and permanent Worcester families live side-by-side in Elm Park. Next door to established single-family residences, some historic homes have been converted into academic buildings, while triple-deckers and other turn-of-the-20th-century buildings are rented out. “They’re around the perimeter and house a lot of college students,” says Joseph Abramoff , a Realtor with BA Property & Lifestyle Advisors and a lifelong Worcester resident. “Then you have single-family historic properties, and some of those have been in the same family for decades.”
Elm Park’s housing is eclectic, with styles ranging from quaint Arts and Crafts cottages and stately Queen Annes to classic Colonial and Tudor revivals. Depending on size, age and condition, single-family homes cost from the high $200,000s to the high $800,000s. For investors, multifamily properties typically start in the mid-$500,000s and can reach nearly $1.5 million. You’ll also find a few condos, typically costing from the low $200,000s to the low $500,000s.

The green space that names Elm Park
Elm Park, the historic green space that gives the neighborhood its name, is one of the oldest municipal parks in the United States. It’s split by Park Avenue. To the west, Newton Hill features wooded trails that lead to a grassy summit with panoramic city views. This section also offers an 18-hole disc golf course, fitness equipment and athletic courts. Elm Park’s east side is smaller and more manicured. Willow trees shade paved walking paths, families head to the playground and red footbridges cross a small pond, where locals ice skate in the winter. Elm Park hosts events, including The Elm Park Summer Concert Series, which brings live, local music, and Art in the Park, when sculptures decorate the grounds during the summer and early fall.

Worcester mainstays along Highland Street
“Elm Park has a great central location,” Ambroff says. “You can walk to restaurants and things if you like, but it stays quiet at night.” Highland Street is the main commercial thoroughfare, lined with established local businesses. College students have frequented The Boynton Restaurant and Spirits since it opened as a tavern in the 1930s. “Everybody knows it, everyone’s been there and everyone thinks they’re the only one who knows about it,” jokes Abramoff, who worked at the restaurant for 5 years. Across the street, The Sole Proprietor is a sleek, upscale spot serving seafood and trendy cocktails. You can sip happy-hour margaritas at Taqueria Del Pueblo, while Thai Time combines traditional favorites with street-vendor styles. A Market 32 grocery store sits along Park Avenue, and farther up you’ll find Shaw’s, CVS pharmacy and more restaurants.
