Vernon Hill is a residential neighborhood in Worcester, where it’s hilly and, on a gridded pattern of streets, cars are parked in front of Victorian architecture. There are a variety of housing options here, from apartments and condos to multi-family homes. Without much commercial activity, the neighborhood feels removed from Worcester’s hustle and bustle; however, it’s located about a mile from The Canal District and has easy access to U.S. Interstate 290 and Massachusetts State Route 146.
Vernon Hill
Single- and multi-family homes, apartments and condos
There’s something for everyone in Vernon Hill, where streets are lined with tall Victorian-style buildings. “There are triple-deckers and duplexes,” says Juliana Danquah, broker/owner of XSell Realty and a Worcester resident with 25 years of experience. “There are also condos, which are a good option for first-time homebuyers or investors who want to put their money in the rental market.” For around $150,000 to $225,000, buyers can expect a one- or two-bedroom condo with one bathroom. In the $400,000 range, expect a single-family four-square property. In the $700,000 range, buyers can find a multi-family property with multiple floors. There are also apartments here, and Danquah says, “There’s a good mix of buyers and renters.”
Brand-new high school facilities
Students are zoned for the Worcester Public School District and can attend Vernon Hill School for prekindergarten to sixth grade, which gets a C-rating from Niche. Then, they can attend North High School, which Niche gives a C-plus. In 2011, North High School opened a brand-new $5 million, 225,000-square-foot facility.
Various recreation options at Vernon Hill Park
Vernon Hill Park spans 15 acres and is walkable from some homes in the neighborhood. In the spring, locals can join a softball or baseball league, and, in the summer, they can go swimming at the pool. Play a pickup game on the basketball court or throw around a frisbee on the multipurpose field. The park also features the city’s first off-leash dog park, which opened in 2017. It’s double-gated and secure, ensuring dogs can meet other dogs safely. There are two separate play areas – for smaller and larger breeds.

Near The Canal District
The neighborhood has access to tons of amenities in downtown Worcester. On the other side of U.S. Interstate 290, The Canal District and Kelley Square have many shopping and dining options, like The Worcester Public Market, an indoor hub for small businesses. The Market Pantry sells curated specialty culinary ingredients. Taqueria Del Pueblo is also here, a popular spot for tacos and quesadillas. As a community gathering place, the market often hosts live local music, which people can listen to while enjoying their meals. Head to Worcester’s Best Pizza on Providence Street, just north of the neighborhood, where everyone knows the owner and lines stretch around the corner. To eat at home, residents can grab groceries from Walmart on Tobias Boland Way, just south of the neighborhood.
Getting around Worcester
“Vernon Hill has easy access to Interstate 290 and Route 146,” says Danquah. “It’s easy to get to Boston or Rhode Island if you work there.” The Worcester Train Station is about a mile and a half north of the neighborhood. Bus routes lead throughout the city, and the neighborhood itself is very walkable, with sidewalks throughout.
