In Webster Square, Worcester’s history meets modern living

Worcester's industrial heritage is visible everywhere you look when you live in Webster Square. Historic landmarks, remnants of old mills and triple-deckers that once housed factory workers sit throughout the neighborhood. Known for being a busy urban center, Webster Square is home to a popular shopping plaza, access to public transportation and several local dining options. But it also has its fair share of outdoor space for recreational activities, from kayaking at Coes Reservoir to pool days at Bennett Field, all just minutes from Downtown Worcester.

What housing looks like and costs in Webster Square

In Webster Square, most residential roads are hilly, narrow and shaded by mature trees, and there is a wide variety of architectural style throughout. “The neighborhood has a post-industrial feel,” says Katie Bilotta, a Realtor with ERA Key Realty Services and a longtime Worcester resident. “You’ll find single-family homes, but there’s also a lot of multifamilies, triple-deckers and duplexes.” Here’s what Webster Square’s home prices look like:

  • Single-family homes roughly cost from the low $200,000s to the high $600,000s, depending on size, age and condition.
  • Townhouses and duplexes often range from the high $200,000s to the high $500,000s.
  • Condos, on Main Street in a converted mill, generally span the low to high $200,000s.
  • Multifamily properties can start around the low $400,000s and reach the low $700,000s.
For single-family homes, common styles include Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals, bungalows and bilevels, with limited infill new construction. Multifamily properties often evoke a classic New England feel, with steep roofs and symmetrical facades.

Where Webster Square residents shop and dine

“They have a huge shopping plaza, and it’s very walkable to amenities,” Bilotta says. On Main Street, Webster Square Plaza and the surrounding area offer a variety of big-box stores, restaurants and services. You can grab groceries from Shaw’s, exercise at Planet Fitness, pick up basics from Dollar Tree or get dinner from Kai Sushi Bar & Grill. For brunch, breakfast or a Mediterranean lunch, stop by Livia’s Dish, a popular eatery known for crepes, Texas French toast and a selection of flavored white Russians. In University Park, about 2 miles from Webster Square, you can shop for local produce and food products, artisan crafts and more at the farmer’s market every Saturday from June to October.

Parks, trails and green space in Webster Square

God’s Acre, in the northern part of Webster Square, is known for its wooded hiking trails and summits with scenic views of Worcester. You can also hike through the area around Parson’s Cider Mill, now defunct, with ponds and industrial remnants along the way. At nearby Bennet Field, there’s a public pool and playgrounds. Roughly 20 acres of public green space lie on the banks of Coes Reservoir, commonly known as Coes Pond, which sits between Webster Square and Columbus Park, the neighborhood just east. The surrounding parks feature walking trails, playgrounds and a public beach, with a well-maintained boardwalk that offers waterfront views and plenty of seating. On the pond’s southern end, Stearns Tavern is a historic city landmark. “They moved the tavern from one part of Worcester to another so that it didn’t get torn down,” Bilotta explains. “It’s stunning, with views of the water, and beside it there’s a children’s playground.”
