A neighborhood with a view

The early bird may get the worm, but in Wormleysburg, residents enjoy beautiful sunrises over the Susquehanna River every day the weather permits. “River views and access to the water are some of the top selling points in Wormleysburg,” says Realtor and associate broker Wendell Hoover with Iron Valley Real Estate of Central PA. Hoover grew up in Central Pennsylvania but has lived and worked in the Harrisburg area for 20 years. “The borough is close to Downtown Harrisburg without being downtown,” he says. “Residents enjoy a central location near restaurants on the river. City Island is right there too, where you can catch baseball games and soccer matches.”

Recreation along Susquehanna

The William O. Weigle Memorial Park is a narrow stretch of land with a walking path that runs along the Susquehanna. It’s a popular spot to watch Fourth of July fireworks. Farther north, Wormleysburg Park may not offer direct river views, but it’s much bigger and features a playground, sports fields and a picnic pavilion for cookouts and other gatherings. Across the Market Street Bridge, City Island is home to the Harrisburg Senators baseball stadium, the professional soccer club Penn FC, the Pride of Susquehanna riverboat, a miniature golf course, the City Island Railroad and the Harrisburg Beach Club, featuring bar drinks and a food truck menu. This island also connects to the Capital Area Greenbelt, with more than 20 miles of biking trails, on the East Shore via the Walnut Street Bridge.

Wide mix of houses

While Wormleysburg features a handful of mansions overlooking the river that sell for $400,000 to well over $1 million, most of the borough is a mix of ranch-style and split-level homes that list for between $250,000 and $360,000. Closer to the river, homes lining North Front Street offer open-water views and range in price from $100,000 to $360,000. Flood insurance may be necessary because low-lying areas along the waterfront are prone to flooding. Townhouses and duplexes are also available, from $150,000 to $350,000. “There’s such a big selection,” Hoover says. “You’ll find high-end to fixer uppers in Wormleysburg. Duplexes, too, are appealing to multi-generational families.”
